This administration has screwed up the US and the world so badly, it will take years to dig urselves out of debt and redeem the United States in the eyes of other countries. They have killed and displaced more people than any other administration in history. A Republican would sell his own mother, and then ask for a "kickback" from the buyer. As long as the rich and famous are the only people that can afford to run for the highest offices in government, the government will be corrupt. Like everything else there needs to be a balance.
I do believe that there are a few honest people elected but there are so many dishonest people in our government that they are either beaten down and choose to leave or as the old saying goes "If you can't beat em join em".
While everyone would like an easy solution to the US problem of economy, welfare, social security, etc., we all know that honesty would be of value.
Social Security show be a NON-TOUCHABLE for other government programs such as welfare and illegal alien support.
Welfare keeps generations of people dependent on the government should only be for a certain amount of time and have strict program guidelines such as no ownership of homes, more than 1 vehicle, etc. Welfare is NOT an entitlement we owe people. If you do not work you do not eat, clean up the city streets, volunteer time to make the community better.
The matter of the economy is a multi-facted problem neither belonging to Democrats or Republicans alone. FORGET PARTY Americans need to make decisions that can help all Americans become independent of government handouts.
American companies need to stop sending jobs and plants to other countries because it is too costly for them to manufacture products here. It doesn't make sense, most Americans would rather pay the higher cost than sacrifice jobs. Come on, HOW MUCH MONEY DO THESE COMPANIES NEED?

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE . . . . think before you vote Hillary into the White House. She doesn't even know where she stands, much less is capable of explaining it. Her platform (?) changes depending on who she is speaking to or debating against. Billy boy looked good fiscally because he was left is a decent financial condition by Regan and G.Bush. However, Billy didn't leave anything for GW to work with . . . and everyone fights tax increases. There are too many hands just hanging out there wanting a piece of the PIE. It is true that American Priorties need to be readdressed. Our own citizens need to be taken care of before all others. Education, Social Security and Medical care must be attacked "head on" and corrected. These are major expenses for all forms of government, but they cannot be ignored any longer. They must be dealt with AHEAD of Welfare, Illegal Immigrants $$$ aid,farm and ranch subsidizing, more 'love and care' for prison inmates and any funds to help other countries (who never appreciate it anyway). Sadly the Democrats will look first to Welfare, foreign families and their children (which must be cared for in their language and according to their customs and beliefs, and those of us who work hard, protect our country, pay taxes, earn our own way, etc. will be ignored as usual.

Bill got the state income tax passed by promising that sales taxes would remain low (we were at 3%) and are now at nearly 8%. The Whitewater fiasco should tell people what they were about also, everyone involved served time but them. How could they be so innocent??? Yes he claimed to be responsible for the prosperity of the 90's but remember all the collapses of big companies and how they were all cooking the books? Thats not real prosperity. Yes he did inherit a good economy. At least we have not had scandal after scandal from the Bush White House. Yes we are still free - if keeping the war on foreign soil involves giving up some of my freedoms I am more than willing. I have nothing to hide. It is common knowledge that a democracy will only survive about 2-300 years as voters who are given the right to vote irrespective of their education will always vote for the one who will promise them the most. I have read so many articles from so many people about getting out of Iraq and Aphganistan and bringing our troops home. No one wants to see our Military put in a dangerous situation. No one wants to see their country go to War. The loss of one life is too many. Yet, there are times we have to defend what we believe in and this is one of those times. Our Military personnel are the best trained, brightest, competent, Military we ever had. With the art of technology we are able to do things that couldn't be done before. True our death toll and wounded toll is much more than expected, but if you look at previous wars, this amount of military casualties would be one battle. Many battles, would be many more than experienced in the Middle East Wars. How many were lost in landing on Normandy, Iwo Jima, Pork Chop Hill, etc. If we don't stop terrorists on foreign soil, we will be fighting them on U.S. soil. The last war fought on our soil was the Civil War and they had tremendous casualties on both sides. Our troops are there defending our FREEDOM !!!! If we don't stay and finish this, we won't have to worry about Domestic Problems. We won't have a country left to worry about. Our enemy knows they can't defeat our Military, so they will just wait us out. What was the quote "We know the Americans. They will get pressure from their citizens when the death toll rises. They will leave in disgrace, and we will win!!" How do you deal with people who kill their own and hide behind women, children and old people??? Everytime we try to put up infrastructure or repair utilities, our efforts are sabbatoged. How do they think we can repair the material and structural things if the regular people don't expose the people blowing up everyone. They kill their own police. Who do they think will provide security ??? They want us to leave and we would like to leave, but if we do not finish what we set out to do we are playing into the hands of the insurgents, I pray everyday for our troops and their loved ones, for the wounded and their loved ones, and for the troops who made the untimate sacrifice and their loved ones. I also pray for our Country. We need to be United again.
Whether you support the War or not, we have to support our troops. They read the newspapers and know what people are thinking and saying. The most important thing is let them know, the ones they are putting their lives on the line for, are behind them 100%. I hope we learned a lesson from how Vietnam Veterans were treated when they returned home. All I have heard from the Democrats is BRING THE TROOPS HOME NOW !!!!

A note to constantinesig:Just to clear the record, I already retired at age 55 due to my working a productive life and will undoubtedly pay a large percentage of my social security income in taxes when received, something I'll gladly accept.The point is many in this country are not as well off as you and I and need the security of knowing they can rely on what was promised to them by this government. Many are just not physically capable of working through circumstances totally out of their control.As I'm writing this response, the stock market is having a good day(finally) and I'll make enough money to help finance some of my favorite Democrat candidates campaigns. Yes, I've followed the saying-"If you want to live like a Republican-Vote like a Democrat."

Give praise to the young Americans who are defending your right to have all that you have. If you do not then we will end up just like the citizens of Iraq.

Republicans lack a clear moral focus and are unwilling to align taxes with the expenses of running government. Both are dangerous habits and both, sadly, have great political appeal to voters.

And to think some of you think the republicans have anything to offer this country...we are TRILLIONS of dollars in debt,thanks to BUSH...and I do want our guys & gals to come home because we are fighting a loosing battle. The Iraq's have been fighting for hundreds of years...they aren't going to stop!!! Not until their own people wake up and decide they are tired of some of their own killing them and they ALL decide to fight for their freedom. I don't think we will ever (SADLY I MIGHT ADD) finish that war...no matter how long we stay and how much money we spend. I hope I am wrong! He got caught with his pants down, but he did alot of good for this country...sure did us good in the debt category which Bush took care of pretty quick, in the opposite direction...putting us more in debt than ever before!! Don't think calling people LOSER is nice either...some people have it easier than others, even though they work equally hard throughout their lives. To retire now with Insurance and enough money to make it is something that I think is pretty rare these days! Thank God we are one of the lucky ones, but no one should be called a loser because they hope social security will be there for people. If they (all the Presidents ) had left SS alone, there would be more to work with and hopefully who ever gets in office will start thinking about our health care and do something about it. Not free necessarily, but at least something we could afford to pay for decent care! We are lucky & have insurance...but I sure feel for those that don't have it and can't afford it! Let's be nice guys and girls...don't slam others...we are all in this together! PEACE & FREEDOM TO ALL, we can only hope!
Rich people don't get rich because they spend money. They get rich beause they save and invest it wisely. Keeping that in mind how about giving any tax payer over the age of 65 with a gross annual income of $175K - to $200K a 10% tax deduction if they leave their money in Social Security. Assuming the most a person can receive from Social Security is $17K per year which in their income bracket is taxable, it would be to their advantage to take 10% right off the top. The annual income doesn't matter as long as the 10% is greater than the Social Security yearly amount. Most people feel that they have paid into Social Security and regardless of their income should receive what they put in. If we could increase what they put in by a 2% to 3% margin if left alone they would not only save money, the money left in Social Security does not become taxable income to the Taxpayer. The numbers are negociable but if we made Social Security a win/win for all we have started a good process. I also feel that people who have not paid into Social Security should not be able to reap the same rewards that those who put in have. If some people are not American citizens why should they receive what American citizens receive? There could be a plan to subsidize these people and that may be just the reason they need to become citizens.
In closing please know that we must all support our troops. We are in great debt to the many men and women in this country who are fighting on foreign lands to keep us protected. May God bless and protect them and their families. We should also give them a pay increase. They are in harms way so that we are not.
I believe that sometimes we talk issues to death while at the same time the issue is nothing but talk. I think the simplest suggestion could be developed to solve many issues. When it is said that "It can't be done, that usually means you won't do it" No matter what "it" is.
Just a few thoughts:
1. A house divided cannot stand! We have not been a country so long that we are invincible! Democrats vs Republicans vs Other... yea, we're petty divided! This is a formula for disaster!
2. The President is not as powerful as everyone thinks! The senate and congress are much more powerful than everyone thinks! CNN, etc., is more powerful than all of them! None of them need the truth to convince "we the people" that something bad is up... we love bad news, it sells!
3. "Our ecconomy is in the dumps"... compared to what? We have broken every ecconomical record known to man... "But our country is in debt trillions of dollars..." when have we not??? "But people are just using credit to buy..." when have they not??? It only looks worse because things are more expensive today.
4. "We should get out of Iraq... It is a loosing battle!" If this is what we believe, then it is a "Lost Battle" and should be familiar to us... since we have already done this in Vietnam... I know this has been said before, but it is true. Think about it, who flooded Vietnam when we pulled out? Bad guys! Who will flood Iraq when we pull out? Bad guys!

Top secret means that CNN wont be reporting on it. There are operations going on that are top secret... I know it is a shock! Do you think Iraq and Saddam was really the BIG problem? Or, prehaps you should pull out a map and see where Iraq is located. Between Iraq and Afganastan, we might currently be sitting on the most strategic millitary locations on the globe! Look at where Russia is, China, Iran, N. Korea, Israel, Saudia Arabia, and the list goes on. Did we take Iraq for the oil? We should have, then we wouldn't be in debt trillions of $. Did we do it to rid the world of terrorists and WMD? We could have, but congress, the senate, and the news propaganda machine would not allow what needed to be done to be done. If you don't believe me... ask any soldier who has been in theater why we cannot win the war... they will tell you it is because they are forbidden to carry out their mission with deadly force because they know the cameras are rolling, the world is watching, judging, and condemning every move they make... Wake up people... war is ugaly, people die, innocent get hurt and die, it is not suppose to be pretty... it is war. For those of you who are complaining about social security, let me tell you a factual story.
I am supposed to be getting about $10,000 in SS and my wife would receive half of that amount.
Because I took SS at age 62, I was cut 25%(my choice).
Because I am retired civil service and had 24 good years of paying SS. I was cut an additional 30%. That was 5% for each year under 30. This cut is for civil service retirees under the CRSR system.
Now the kicker, because my wife and I have saved, invested and I worked three jobs often and have accumulated a nice amount of cash, my SS and my wife's SS is now subject to the means test for paying part B medicare. I just received notice that next year , we would pay an additional $62.80 each for our insurance and next year it will go higher.(Ultimately, we will pay 100% with no goverment payment. This year we will pay $383.60 for our medicare insurance. This leaves us with a combined amount of $641.00 in SS monthly for 2008. This is a reduction of from what should be 1500.00 monthly to 641.00 . In a few more years, we will not receive enough to may for medicare. And to top all of this off, We will pay regular tax on 85% of thethe total amount of 383.60 plus 641.00 = $1024.60 X.85= 870.91 X .28(tax bracket) =243.85. Now if you do the math, that leaves us with 641.00-243.85= $397.15 that we will receive monthly for the two of us. I know that you readers will not believe this story. But it is true and it holds true for those folks who retired at age 62, retired CSRS and who have accumulated wealth by their hard work and living below their means over the years. I am now crying in my milk and am blessed to live in this great country. But, the govt can sometime be very unfair to a group of folks and for CSRS folks this is true. Thanks for letting me vent my frustrations.
I meant to say, I am not crying in my milk. But, I am ventilating my anger. I envision a means test for social security in the coming years. Congress eased in the means test for medicare payments and no one noticed. This started last year. Your adjusted gross income is the basis and it will affect many of your readers who are on medicare. It affected my widowed sister this year and it may hit you next.
There are some really good comments here. You folks are right...we are a divided country (Republican/Democrat/Other) and that is such a shame. I, for one, get so sick and tired of all of the mud slinging commercials we all see on TV during an election year. Too bad the folks that want us to elect them to lead our country can't act like grown adults. I also agree with the comment about no person should become a "career politician". One to two terms in office should be it. Shame on the states that keep sending the same folks back for the past 10 or 20 years. Just like the state of Massachusetts. Shame on you folks! How long has Kennedy been in office now? The man doesn't know how to do anything else. That's down right shameful. I'm also tired of only lawyers and the rich getting put into office. Our government has such a bad reputation. It's time we change that! What about the "Average Joe", like myself, that would truly like to work for the best interest of the American public and is not concerned about how much money I can make for myself, but what good I can do to help the hard working Americans that keep this country going. The congress has made it to where they don't have to pay SS and they don't pay income taxes and they don't have to pay for health insurance and things such as this. The things you and I have to pay dearly for. And they're looking out for our best interest...YEAH RIGHT!
I know we have it better here in this country than most people do. Don't get me wrong...there are so many GREAT things we could say about living in the USA, but there are also many things we could improve upon as well. We just need to wake up as a nation and get the folks that are not looking out for our best interest out of Washington!

Paul, I really, really want to agree with you on bringing our troops home and putting them on the Mexican border... My only issue with that is, if we pull out of Iraq, who will take our place? Will the Iraqi people will just figure out how to get along on their own? Or, will one of the power hungry countries like Iran (who by the way was at war with Iraq for 8 years prior to desert storm) take advantage of the void we leave. Seriously, the truth is, no matter what any of these politicians, Dem or Rep, are saying they will do when they get elected, none of them have any notions of closing our military bases there and sending the troops home. Iran is developing necular weaponry, and Russia is supporting it! This is a problem much bigger than straightening out the Iraqi situation. We need those strategic bases in Iraq & Afganistan to keep Iran, Russia, and N Korea in check. World trade requires world stability. My nephew is in Iraq, and I have friends and church members that I care about there, but the bottom line is, we must keep a presence there (a strong one) to keep the peace. I would rather bring them all home and let all those guys fight among themselves, but the fact remains, if we don't fight them there, we will eventually fight them here. Follow the news on how close Iran and Russia are becoming... Note also, pretty much all of the terrorists organizations operating in Iraq are not from Iraq. Where are they coming from? Perhaps Iran is one of the suppliers? Why would they do that? Remember what the terrorists said at the baginning of Desert Shield, "we may not have the military to defeat America, but if we can wait them out, the will of the American people will crumble, forcing their government to pull their military out, giving us the victory" It seems that is exactly what is happening. Mark my words, no matter who wins the White House in 2008, we all will find out that the troops are not leaving Iraq anytime soon. If the Rep wins, they will say they are correcting the mistakes Bush made... If the Dem wins, they will say they are stuck fixing the mistakes Bush made. What no one will say for a long time (but perhaps will one day) is that although Bush may have taken Iraq under the guise of WMD, he really hoped to gain a strong foothold in the region (an incredibly smart move strategically) where we can establish military bases in which we can operate without having to get permission from the host country (as is the case with our base in Saudia Arabia... where we have to get permission to fly over their territory to complete military missions) (also, dont forget that Turkey said NO when we asked if we could send our military through their territory). This is kinda like a huge, deadly game of chess, in which we had better play to win. If we decide not to play, don't think for a minute that Iran, N Korea, and Russia, etc... will quit also. What I am saying is, no matter how bad we would like to end this mess in Iraq, we can't!!!
As for the rest of what you said... sadly you are right... we are a greedy, self-centered, complaining country... But, I've been to several other countries, including Russia, and you know what... There is no place like home! America is pretty awesome compared to everywhere else I've been...

If our representatives made the same money as the "Average Joe" and had to retire on SS, and pay medicare like most people... I bet these programs would be changed. But like you say, they don't have to endure it...
If the Congress and the Senate think that Social Security is just fine for us, I think we should offer to trade places with them. If they had to live on SS they would sure fix it in a hurry. Paying for medicare and the "new" perscription package plus a supplement to the medicare plan runs somewhere in the neighborhood of $250.00 per month for one person. They call that help? I must be missing something here. And as far as the gap in medicare for medicine between $2,400.00 and $3,850.00 is a joke. Who thought up that gap or hole as they term it. The "Gap" my friends is a store in every mall. They sell clothes!!!! I think whomever writes the new (if there is one) program should be prepared to use it. The Congress and Senate should be the first ones on the list.
Someone should learn the art of negociating. I could even come up with a plan that would be a win/win and I'm not a politician.

As long as the rich and famous are the only people that can afford to run for the highest offices in government, the government will be corrupt. Like everything else there needs to be a balance.

I have read so many articles from so many people about getting out of Iraq and Aphganistan and bringing our troops home. No one wants to see our Military put in a dangerous situation. No one wants to see their country go to War. The loss of one life is too many. Yet, there are times we have to defend what we believe in and this is one of those times. Our Military personnel are the best trained, brightest, competent, Military we ever had. With the art of technology we are able to do things that couldn't be done before. True our death toll and wounded toll is much more than expected, but if you look at previous wars, this amount of military casualties would be one battle. Many battles, would be many more than experienced in the Middle East Wars. How many were lost in landing on Normandy, Iwo Jima, Pork Chop Hill, etc. If we don't stop terrorists on foreign soil, we will be fighting them on U.S. soil. The last war fought on our soil was the Civil War and they had tremendous casualties on both sides. Our troops are there defending our FREEDOM !!!! If we don't stay and finish this, we won't have to worry about Domestic Problems. We won't have a country left to worry about. Our enemy knows they can't defeat our Military, so they will just wait us out. What was the quote "We know the Americans. They will get pressure from their citizens when the death toll rises. They will leave in disgrace, and we will win!!" How do you deal with people who kill their own and hide behind women, children and old people??? Everytime we try to put up infrastructure or repair utilities, our efforts are sabbatoged. How do they think we can repair the material and structural things if the regular people don't expose the people blowing up everyone. They kill their own police. Who do they think will provide security ??? They want us to leave and we would like to leave, but if we do not finish what we set out to do we are playing into the hands of the insurgents, I pray everyday for our troops and their loved ones, for the wounded and their loved ones, and for the troops who made the untimate sacrifice and their loved ones. I also pray for our Country. We need to be United again.
Whether you support the War or not, we have to support our troops. They read the newspapers and know what people are thinking and saying. The most important thing is let them know, the ones they are putting their lives on the line for, are behind them 100%. I hope we learned a lesson from how Vietnam Veterans were treated when they returned home. All I have heard from the Democrats is BRING THE TROOPS HOME NOW !!!!

A note to constantinesig:Just to clear the record, I already retired at age 55 due to my working a productive life and will undoubtedly pay a large percentage of my social security income in taxes when received, something I'll gladly accept.The point is many in this country are not as well off as you and I and need the security of knowing they can rely on what was promised to them by this government. Many are just not physically capable of working through circumstances totally out of their control.As I'm writing this response, the stock market is having a good day(finally) and I'll make enough money to help finance some of my favorite Democrat candidates campaigns. Republicans lack a clear moral focus and are unwilling to align taxes with the expenses of running government. Both are dangerous habits and both, sadly, have great political appeal to voters.

And to think some of you think the republicans have anything to offer this country...we are TRILLIONS of dollars in debt,thanks to BUSH...and I do want our guys & gals to come home because we are fighting a loosing battle. The Iraq's have been fighting for hundreds of years...they aren't going to stop!!! Not until their own people wake up and decide they are tired of some of their own killing them and they ALL decide to fight for their freedom. I don't think we will ever (SADLY I MIGHT ADD) finish that war...no matter how long we stay and how much money we spend. I hope I am wrong! Don't think calling people LOSER is nice either...some people have it easier than others, even though they work equally hard throughout their lives. To retire now with Insurance and enough money to make it is something that I think is pretty rare these days! Thank God we are one of the lucky ones, but no one should be called a loser because they hope social security will be there for people. If they (all the Presidents ) had left SS alone, there would be more to work with and hopefully who ever gets in office will start thinking about our health care and do something about it. Not free necessarily, but at least something we could afford to pay for decent care! We are lucky & have insurance...but I sure feel for those that don't have it and can't afford it! Let's be nice guys and girls...don't slam others...we are all in this together! PEACE & FREEDOM TO ALL, we can only hope!
Rich people don't get rich because they spend money. They get rich beause they save and invest it wisely. Keeping that in mind how about giving any tax payer over the age of 65 with a gross annual income of $175K - to $200K a 10% tax deduction if they leave their money in Social Security. Assuming the most a person can receive from Social Security is $17K per year which in their income bracket is taxable, it would be to their advantage to take 10% right off the top. The annual income doesn't matter as long as the 10% is greater than the Social Security yearly amount. Most people feel that they have paid into Social Security and regardless of their income should receive what they put in. If we could increase what they put in by a 2% to 3% margin if left alone they would not only save money, the money left in Social Security does not become taxable income to the Taxpayer. The numbers are negociable but if we made Social Security a win/win for all we have started a good process. I also feel that people who have not paid into Social Security should not be able to reap the same rewards that those who put in have. If some people are not American citizens why should they receive what American citizens receive? There could be a plan to subsidize these people and that may be just the reason they need to become citizens.
In closing please know that we must all support our troops. We are in great debt to the many men and women in this country who are fighting on foreign lands to keep us protected. May God bless and protect them and their families. We should also give them a pay increase. They are in harms way so that we are not.
I believe that sometimes we talk issues to death while at the same time the issue is nothing but talk. I think the simplest suggestion could be developed to solve many issues. When it is said that "It can't be done, that usually means you won't do it" No matter what "it" is.
Just a few thoughts:
1. A house divided cannot stand! We have not been a country so long that we are invincible! Democrats vs Republicans vs Other... yea, we're petty divided! This is a formula for disaster!
2. The President is not as powerful as everyone thinks! The senate and congress are much more powerful than everyone thinks! CNN, etc., is more powerful than all of them! None of them need the truth to convince "we the people" that something bad is up... we love bad news, it sells!
3. "Our ecconomy is in the dumps"... compared to what? We have broken every ecconomical record known to man... "But our country is in debt trillions of dollars..." when have we not??? "But people are just using credit to buy..." when have they not??? It only looks worse because things are more expensive today.
4. "We should get out of Iraq... It is a loosing battle!" If this is what we believe, then it is a "Lost Battle" and should be familiar to us... since we have already done this in Vietnam... I know this has been said before, but it is true. Think about it, who flooded Vietnam when we pulled out? Bad guys! Who will flood Iraq when we pull out? Bad guys!

Or, prehaps you should pull out a map and see where Iraq is located. Between Iraq and Afganastan, we might currently be sitting on the most strategic millitary locations on the globe! Look at where Russia is, China, Iran, N. Korea, Israel, Saudia Arabia, and the list goes on. Did we take Iraq for the oil? We should have, then we wouldn't be in debt trillions of $. Did we do it to rid the world of terrorists and WMD? We could have, but congress, the senate, and the news propaganda machine would not allow what needed to be done to be done. If you don't believe me... ask any soldier who has been in theater why we cannot win the war... they will tell you it is because they are forbidden to carry out their mission with deadly force because they know the cameras are rolling, the world is watching, judging, and condemning every move they make... Wake up people... war is ugaly, people die, innocent get hurt and die, it is not suppose to be pretty... it is war. If you want to win, you must bring your A game, your best players, most powerful equiptment, and go kick their butt... quickly and deciecively!!! Here is another revelation for you... No matter who takes the Oval office in 2008, we are NOT going to forfit a millitary base in Iraq or Afganastan. It would be FOOLISH to give up such strategic positions! Mark my words, if by chance we do... America is in serious trouble!!!
For those of you who are complaining about social security, let me tell you a factual story.
I am supposed to be getting about $10,000 in SS and my wife would receive half of that amount.
Because I took SS at age 62, I was cut 25%(my choice).
Because I am retired civil service and had 24 good years of paying SS. I was cut an additional 30%. That was 5% for each year under 30. This cut is for civil service retirees under the CRSR system.
Now the kicker, because my wife and I have saved, invested and I worked three jobs often and have accumulated a nice amount of cash, my SS and my wife's SS is now subject to the means test for paying part B medicare. I just received notice that next year , we would pay an additional $62.80 each for our insurance and next year it will go higher.(Ultimately, we will pay 100% with no goverment payment. This year we will pay $383.60 for our medicare insurance. This leaves us with a combined amount of $641.00 in SS monthly for 2008. This is a reduction of from what should be 1500.00 monthly to 641.00 . In a few more years, we will not receive enough to may for medicare. And to top all of this off, We will pay regular tax on 85% of thethe total amount of 383.60 plus 641.00 = $1024.60 X.85= 870.91 X .28(tax bracket) =243.85. Now if you do the math, that leaves us with 641.00-243.85= $397.15 that we will receive monthly for the two of us. I know that you readers will not believe this story. But it is true and it holds true for those folks who retired at age 62, retired CSRS and who have accumulated wealth by their hard work and living below their means over the years. I am now crying in my milk and am blessed to live in this great country. But, the govt can sometime be very unfair to a group of folks and for CSRS folks this is true. Thanks for letting me vent my frustrations.
I meant to say, I am not crying in my milk. But, I am ventilating my anger. I envision a means test for social security in the coming years. Congress eased in the means test for medicare payments and no one noticed. This started last year. Your adjusted gross income is the basis and it will affect many of your readers who are on medicare. It affected my widowed sister this year and it may hit you next.
There are some really good comments here. You folks are right...we are a divided country (Republican/Democrat/Other) and that is such a shame. I, for one, get so sick and tired of all of the mud slinging commercials we all see on TV during an election year. Too bad the folks that want us to elect them to lead our country can't act like grown adults. The sadest part of it all is that they all work against one another to be loyal to a "party" rather than work together to do what's best for America as a nation!
I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one that realizes the media only shows us what THEY want us to see. The Iraqi War...I'm not even going to touch that one. I will say that we are getting biased views of the war from the media. Just talk to one of the men or women that have returned from over there. I know...this is just an opinion...but the news media has NO PLACE over there following our troops around. Those folks need to get out of the way and let our troops do their jobs! We as Americans should support our brave troops whether we agree with the cause or not! Okay...sorry...I said I wasn't going to touch that one.
I also agree with the comment about no person should become a "career politician". One to two terms in office should be it. Shame on the states that keep sending the same folks back for the past 10 or 20 years. Just like the state of Massachusetts. Shame on you folks! How long has Kennedy been in office now? The man doesn't know how to do anything else. That's down right shameful. I'm also tired of only lawyers and the rich getting put into office. Our government has such a bad reputation. It's time we change that! What about the "Average Joe", like myself, that would truly like to work for the best interest of the American public and is not concerned about how much money I can make for myself, but what good I can do to help the hard working Americans that keep this country going. The congress has made it to where they don't have to pay SS and they don't pay income taxes and they don't have to pay for health insurance and things such as this. The things you and I have to pay dearly for. And they're looking out for our best interest...YEAH RIGHT!
I know we have it better here in this country than most people do. Don't get me wrong...there are so many GREAT things we could say about living in the USA, but there are also many things we could improve upon as well. We just need to wake up as a nation and get the folks that are not looking out for our best interest out of Washington!

And for those of you who didn't know, I think most people do, but we were trillions of dollars in debt before Bush, and I'm sure we are all quite aware that whomever takes the office in the next term, will receive just as much slander and bashing as this president, and every one before him has. Why, because we're Americans, and by nature we're not happy unless we're complaining about everything.

Paul, I really, really want to agree with you on bringing our troops home and putting them on the Mexican border... My only issue with that is, if we pull out of Iraq, who will take our place? Will the Iraqi people will just figure out how to get along on their own? Or, will one of the power hungry countries like Iran (who by the way was at war with Iraq for 8 years prior to desert storm) take advantage of the void we leave. Seriously, the truth is, no matter what any of these politicians, Dem or Rep, are saying they will do when they get elected, none of them have any notions of closing our military bases there and sending the troops home. Iran is developing necular weaponry, and Russia is supporting it! This is a problem much bigger than straightening out the Iraqi situation. We need those strategic bases in Iraq & Afganistan to keep Iran, Russia, and N Korea in check. World trade requires world stability. My nephew is in Iraq, and I have friends and church members that I care about there, but the bottom line is, we must keep a presence there (a strong one) to keep the peace. I would rather bring them all home and let all those guys fight among themselves, but the fact remains, if we don't fight them there, we will eventually fight them here. Follow the news on how close Iran and Russia are becoming... Note also, pretty much all of the terrorists organizations operating in Iraq are not from Iraq. Where are they coming from? Perhaps Iran is one of the suppliers? Why would they do that? Remember what the terrorists said at the baginning of Desert Shield, "we may not have the military to defeat America, but if we can wait them out, the will of the American people will crumble, forcing their government to pull their military out, giving us the victory" It seems that is exactly what is happening. Mark my words, no matter who wins the White House in 2008, we all will find out that the troops are not leaving Iraq anytime soon. If the Rep wins, they will say they are correcting the mistakes Bush made... If the Dem wins, they will say they are stuck fixing the mistakes Bush made. What no one will say for a long time (but perhaps will one day) is that although Bush may have taken Iraq under the guise of WMD, he really hoped to gain a strong foothold in the region (an incredibly smart move strategically) where we can establish military bases in which we can operate without having to get permission from the host country (as is the case with our base in Saudia Arabia... where we have to get permission to fly over their territory to complete military missions) (also, dont forget that Turkey said NO when we asked if we could send our military through their territory). This is kinda like a huge, deadly game of chess, in which we had better play to win. If we decide not to play, don't think for a minute that Iran, N Korea, and Russia, etc... will quit also. What I am saying is, no matter how bad we would like to end this mess in Iraq, we can't!!!
As for the rest of what you said... sadly you are right... we are a greedy, self-centered, complaining country... But, I've been to several other countries, including Russia, and you know what... There is no place like home! America is pretty awesome compared to everywhere else I've been...

If our representatives made the same money as the "Average Joe" and had to retire on SS, and pay medicare like most people... I bet these programs would be changed. But like you say, they don't have to endure it...
If the Congress and the Senate think that Social Security is just fine for us, I think we should offer to trade places with them. If they had to live on SS they would sure fix it in a hurry. Paying for medicare and the "new" perscription package plus a supplement to the medicare plan runs somewhere in the neighborhood of $250.00 per month for one person. They call that help? I must be missing something here. And as far as the gap in medicare for medicine between $2,400.00 and $3,850.00 is a joke. Who thought up that gap or hole as they term it. The "Gap" my friends is a store in every mall. They sell clothes!!!! I think whomever writes the new (if there is one) program should be prepared to use it. The Congress and Senate should be the first ones on the list.
Someone should learn the art of negociating. I could even come up with a plan that would be a win/win and I'm not a politician.

I, for one am happy with the economy. I am making more (and spending more) than ever under the Republicans. If the dems take control of the White House, we will suffer a recession. Write it down. The dems want me to pay for all the children in the world born to unwed and un fit mothers. I don't want to!
