Christopher Zaverdas, a new freshman at Commack High School, played the role of hero this summer when he assisted a rival bicyclist who accidentally drove off the road during the Empire State Games in Binghamton in late July.
The injured racer suffered a bee sting near her eye and told Zaverdas that she was allergic when he stopped to help.
“I knew I had to act quickly,” said Zaverdas, who rides up to 150 miles a week and was the youngest contestant during the series of bicycle races that spanned four days. “I asked her if she had a cell phone, and I was happy to hear her say yes, as I didn’t have mine. I called 911 and explained the situation. But when they asked where I was I couldn’t tell them, because there wasn’t a street sign.”
Zaverdas ran a quarter-mile to the nearest house in order to find a street address. To recognize his efforts, Empire State officials presented him with a special lifesaving award.
