Whitman girls get tennis volunteer award

Kristina Maimis and Jennifer Smith, both Walt Whitman sophomores, have been unanimously selected as recipients of the prestigious Junior Volunteer of the Year Award from the United States Tennis Association (USTA). Both students are members of the Whitman Girls Tennis team. While attending summer tennis camp in Bethpage, they were told of an opportunity that sounded interesting. Both girls eagerly signed on as volunteers to help children and adults with disabilities learn and enjoy tennis.

“I saw that even though these kids and adults have serious disabilities, once on the tennis court they were very competitive,” said Maimis. “Each time I finish a lesson and leave the court, I have this tremendous feeling of accomplishment.” Smith agreed, adding, “Helping someone makes me feel good inside.”

The girls received their awards at the Eighteenth Annual Award Dinner, held recently at the Crest Hollow Country Club. “Their commitment and enthusiasm toward growing the game of tennis and helping those less fortunate enjoy the sport made both girls the obvious choices for this year’s awards committee,” said Marlene Beckenstein, Vice President of the USTA Long Island Region.

Whitman’s tennis coach, Mr. Adam Genovese, is not at all surprised by the award. “Both girls come from families who are very supportive and giving,” said Genovese. “Seeing them at each tennis match setting up food and drink tables for both teams, I’m not surprised that these two girls would also be giving of their time.

“Jen and Kristina were the team’s third and fourth best players as sophomores, and they have steadily improved their game and become leaders on the team,” continued Genovese. “They are my first doubles, and we look forward to getting back on the competitive court this fall.” In addition to playing for the Whitman team come September, the girls will continue their volunteer work.
