Huntington Station corner renamed

carmen1.jpgThe intersection of Route 110 and Pulaski Road in Huntington Station has been renamed of Carmen Ramos Calixto-Laas Corner in honor of the longtime community activist who was instrumental in cleaning up and beautifying the street corner that now bears her name.

Shown at left at last month’s ceremony are Suffolk Legis. Jon Cooper (D-Huntington), who sponsored the resolution for the renaming, and Carmen's daughter, Lehti Alejandrina Laas.

Carmen Ramos Calixto-Laas was born in Puerto Rico and moved to Huntington Station in the early 1960s to raise her family. She was very active in the Huntington Station community and St. Hugh of Lincoln Roman Catholic Church, working tirelessly to help those less fortunate than herself.

In 2005, Carmen decided she wanted to take her mission of helping others outside of Huntington Station and she traveled with Ugandan priests to Africa on a humanitarian mission, where she died just one week after arriving on the continent.
