Monserrate: Lulu deferred
Democratic State Sen. Hiram Monserrate, facing felony charges for slashing his girlfriend, was named chairman of the consumer affairs committee last week, to the consternation of some.
Legally, he had a right to be sworn in. But the Democrats didn't have to make him chairman. Today, the Senate Dems announce that he'll keep the chairmanship -- but he's giving up his $12,500 stipend while he's under indictment.

SINCE SENATORS get their money for serving as a Committee
Chair only at the time when the budget passes (April 1), the
announcement today is a total sham. He is not giving up anything!
He, and every other Senate leader, Senate Chair and Senate
Ranking member are not scheduled to receive their stipend
until 10 weeks from today.
Great spinners...even Riley was taken in.
