Media elite: Why Ifill is wrong, and so are they
Gwen Ifill is card-carrying member of the media establishment, so predictably a lot of Names have leapt to defend her neutrality today after questions were raised about whether her contract for an Obama-related book might affect the way she moderates tomorrow night's debate.
As we noted in an item this morning, the book is tentatively titled "The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama." Random House has scheduled its release for Inauguration Day. It is supposed to "shed new light" on Democratic candidate Barack Obama and other "emerging young African American politicians" who are "forging a bold new path to political power."
Questions about Ifill led the Drudge Report this morning and quickly began to reverberate in the conservative echo chamber. Rush Limbaugh said she was "totally in the tank" for Obama. But various media backers -- the Washington Post's Howard Kurtz, PBS' Judy Woodruff, bloggers Marc Ambinder and Ben Smith -- came to her defense, arguing that it was a bogus controversy designed to "work the ref" in advance of the Palin debate. Some -- Kurtz, for example -- said it had a "racial subtext" suggesting a black moderator couldn't be impartial.
McCain, for his part, said it didn't "help" but he thought she would be "professional," while Ifill went into high-road mode: "I’ve got a pretty long track record covering politics and news, so I’m not particularly worried that one-day blog chatter is going to destroy my reputation. The proof is in the pudding. They can watch the debate tomorrow night and make their own decisions about whether or not I’ve done my job.”
The view here: There's no doubt that the right raised it with political motives, but that doesn't mean Ifill and her supporters are right.
We've seen moderators questioned on a consistent basis this year -- Russert, Stephanopoulos, Gibson, now Ifill. The partisan operatives who run politics want to eat every possible source of neutral information, undercut it, and force voters to depend on the Red Version or the Blue Version of reality. They have convinced lots of people to not trust the press, and they'd like to convince people not to trust debates, either -- to view them as events skewed by a biased media.
The press is giving them plenty of ammunition. It is out of fashion and uneconomical these days for reporters to be totally straight newspeople. Everybody needs to have an attitude, write a book, blog, opine in web chats or cable meet-the-media shows, move from the media to politics, from politics back to the media. Everybody wants to be famous, make money, show how deep they are.
All these things are fine, and in some ways healthy. But a presidential debate is a national treasure. It happens four times every four years. Organizations that want to run them have to make sure the moderators are purer than the driven snow, and the moderators have to behave accordingly. Neutrality and the appearance of neutrality has to be their watchword.
The question is not whether Ifill will in fact be fair, or whether the Republicans are playing a game on her. It is whether public confidence in the media and the fairness of the political landscape, already pretty shaky, will be enhanced by the decision of a "neutral moderator" to sign a book contract based on the bigness of Obama and schedule it for release on Inauguration Day.
He won't be as big on Jan 20 if he loses, will he? So she won't make as much money, will she?Nor does hype about Obama's "bold new path" suggest dispassionate skepticism. It does not create an appearance of neutrality. The spin today speaks for itself. She's given a lever to people who want to question the fairness of what happens tomorrow night, and their arguments are not absurd.
In the long view, it has polluted the debate, and the debate is more important than Gwen Ifill.

Not a bad piece, I am somewhat "SHOCKED" but maybe I am getting thru to you. That the press needs to represent "US" not themself looking to get a job with the people they cover.
I won't here repeat my complaint with Newsday for not policing there reporters in Albany. But I do have say something about good old "Ben Smith" he is so far up the .....of the Democ"rats". I will bet you if Obama wins he will get a job in Washington. He has used every job he has had to move up the ladder. As you can guess I am not a "FAN" of his. He is all talk about free speech and blogging and go to the mat to protect a blogger on his blog room 8. I used to blog their in fact I was blogging for over 2 years until my post regarding Barbara Walters having sex with a former US Senator. I used the same type of tactics he uses when he writes his blog. But I guess I hit to close to home so he banned me from posting any more. He also tried to ban me from posting on the NY Daily News Blog, but that back fired on him. Yes, Ben Smith is a piece of work.

ps Ben Smith I still waiting for a reply it has been 4 months what the matter cat got your fingers.
Total non-story once you get into the facts. This book deal AND the title was announced on the conservative Washington Post on July 23rd! It can still be found on its website. In addition, it got more publicity in August, and can easily be found doing a basic google search. Does anyone really believe that Mc Cain's people didnt know this before they agreed to her selection? yes, it is true that the Mc Cain folks regularly do dumb things, but not usually without good data and a motive!
Working the ref. Right from the playbook.
I wonder if she was going to tell all the viewers that she has written a book about Obama and the election before she starts the debate.
BTW McCain says she is a pro and is not worried. But it is the public that is concerned about fairness. If she was writing a book about McCain I wonder what you would have said then.

I would say this is more an account of working the American people than working the refs. The McCain campaign negotiated the specifics of this debate, the format, the rules, even the height of the podium, and yes, agreeing to the moderator. For anyone who knows how to use "the google" it has been openly known that Gwen Ifill was writing this book. EIther the McCain does not know how to properly vet, or they are playing the American citizenry as fools..... either scenario just adds to his lack of credibility as a president. And really, just how big do you think the market is for a look at the breakthroughs in black politicians --- it's not like she is writing an Obama autobiography. I am tired of partisans trying to immunize American citizens against the free press by these blatant tactics. IT lessens our ability to participate wisely in our governing system. And if there is anyone watching the debate, who does not yet know that Ms Ifill has written this book, they ought to get a little more involved in their own education. The information is surely out there.
Ifill did not disclose this to the Commision doing the debates. She also wrote a fluff piece on Obama and his family in Essence magazine. Then there was her obvious distaste for Palin when she was reporting on the convention. Then follow the money. If Obama wins her book makes more money than if he loses. So I believe her nuetrality is either conciously or sub-conciously tainted. I love it!
