Hofstra: Scenes from a debate II: Rednecks!
You can link to the goings on at Hofstra here (click on Sights & Sounds from Hofstra) or here, including this sketch of one outpost of niche politics filed by Newsday's Patrick Whittle:
One of the more popular demonstration groups on Hofstra's campus had perhaps the most provocative name - "Rednecks for Obama."Tony Viessman, a self-described redneck and the three-member group's leader, spent Wednesday afternoon handing out stickers and posing for pictures, and said he supports Obama because "he'll take care of the working class better."
Viessman, from Rolla, Mo., said he has traveled to the three debates and the Democratic convention. He said his website, Rednecks4Obama.com, has racked up 1.2 million hits in the last two months.
The group's stickers say it is "workin' for the man who'll do more for the workin' man." But Viessman said southern voters will need to overcome "wedge issues" such as abortion and gun control for Obama to win the rural vote.
Postscript: We checked out the website, and, sure enough, it exists! The slogan: "We Hunt, Fish, Drink Beer and Support Barack Obama." Here's a picture from the website:
