Florida: Obama boost from GOP governor
Florida Gov. Charlie Crist has extended early voting hours at polling places that were developing long lines as thousands of Floridians came to cast their ballots in record numbers before election day.
This is in a state where low turnout favors McCain, and big turnout helps Obama, or so conventional wisdom holds. The state's early voting law had limited the hours to eight, as we understood it, at the insistence of Republican legislators. Crist issued an executive order.
So, it helps Obama in a key state. But also, it suggests that Crist is accommodating himself to a new reality -- and not one in which he expects McCain to win Florida and the White House.
