GOP district judge hopefuls in Islip tossed off ballot
Republican candidates Cameron Alden and Hertha Trotto last night were stricken from the primary ballot for district court by state Supreme Court Justice Alan Scheinkman in Westchester.
Scheinkman ruled that 44 of the 2,020 signatures submitted by the Islip GOP were not valid, leaving Alden, a Suffolk legislator from Islip, and Trotto, an 17-year incumbent from Holbrook, 24 short of the 2,000 valid signatures needed to qualify.
Alden, who cannot seek re-election to the Legislature because of term limits, said he will appeal the decision to the state Appellate Division next week.
"Whatever happened, I figured we were going up there," he said. "I don’t look at it as a big deal.
I think we should be back on the ballot."
The removal of Alden and Trotto leaves newcomer Jennifer Henry as the overwhelming favorite to win the seat. She also has the Democratic, Conservative and Independence party lines.

This sums up the problem in a nutshell. Trunzo has run the party to the bottom of the barrel. Townwide, they could not get more than 2,000 good signatures for their candidates. There is no grass roots. There is no enthusiam. There are no troops. It is an absolute disgrace. While I feel sorry for the candidates, they got what they deserved by relying on this hapless bunch of greedy fools. Trotto is a good judge and deserves better.
Just a foreboding of what is to come in November when Trunzo is "retired" from the Senate by the voters. Something that should have happened on his own a decade ago.
Way to go, Caesar. You've singlehandedly ruined the once powerful Islip GOP. When Obama sweeps NY, you'll be swept out, too!
As a card carrying member of the GOP I have to admit that I am not unhappy that Alden's political career will soon be over, at least for the time being. He is a big bag of hot air and did a lousy job as a legislator. I would have liked to see lots more effort on controlling spending and police taxes. But, he would rather hold press conferences and play inside politics. Abolishment of the SC Legislature would be an excellent move. Alden on the judicial bench? Absolutely not. Alden on the political bench? Oh yeh.
Everybody saw this coming months ago. The ultimate failure of leadership by Trunzo & Messina. Two respectable incumbents not even getting on the ballot. After two lost primaries, losing town hall and now this all in 3 years. And some may not be aware of all the countless shennigans that they have pulled, but just recently, Trunzo steps up for recognition at Spota's fundraiser with Jennifer Henry (The winning GOP Candidate for Alden/Trotta's nomination who is cross endorsed by all the major parties), Frank McKay (Independence Party Chair), Wil Ford (The Democratic beneficiary of Trotta/Alden decision) and Rich Schaffer (Democratic Chair) smiling away as if he hasn't a care in the world. How long must the Islip GOP suffer under these fools. IT IS MORE THAN TIME FOR TRUNZO & MESSINA TO GO!!!!
21st Century Republican you are absolutely right. It is Trunzo & Messina'a fault, but is also Alden's. He was found not qualified to be a judge, yet still ran because he was promised the spot for being a loyalist. How many times does Trunzo have to blamed until he finally relizes that he is the problem?
I agree with Jim and Bob about Alden. He was nothing but a lackey for McGowan who bankrolled his first campaign. He was lucky to beat Nolan that time. He lacks character, conviction, courage and intelligence and has no business being on the bench. Trotto, on the other hand, becomes the real victim of the demise of the once proud Islip GOP. Nice job, Caesar.

All Islip Republicans are saddened by the recent decision by Westchester Supreme Court Justice, Hon. Alan Scheinkman, knocking three term incumbent Judge, Hon. Hertha Trotto, and six term incumbent Suffolk County Legislator, Cameron Alden, off November’s ballot as District Court candidates. In a recent court ruling both candidates’ names were ordered removed from the ballot due to the failure to obtain enough valid signatures on their nominating petitions.
The 21st Century Republicans repeatedly warned the Islip Republican Committee leadership, Chairman Caesar Trunzo, and Vice Chairperson Jeanette Messina, as far back as December, 2007, that such a previously unthinkable event could happen. Through their extensive communication with Republican committee members, and local Republican club members, the group repeatedly warned Trunzo and Messina of the faithful’s unwillingness to obtain signatures until Trunzo and Messina passed the torch of leadership to younger, newer party members. The current leaders, Trunzo and Messina, scoffed at the warnings; as evidenced by Chairman Trunzo’s recent comments to Rick Brand in Newsday that he had his “…own army…,” and did not need the dissatisfied committee members.
Ironically, Chairman Trunzo, and his so-called “army,” were able to easily get more than enough signatures to insure Trunzo’s place on the ballot, but couldn’t, or wouldn’t, do the same for Judge Trotto or Legislator Alden. We regret this unfortunate news, and hope that an appeal of this ruling will result will result in Judge Trotto and Legislator Alden being restored to the ballot.
Trust me, Trunzo has no army. The bulk of his signatures came from the Brookhaven GOP. From Hail Caesar...it is now Fail Caesar. Sad, but as the last post said, highly predicatble. I hope something good happens for Trotto.
I agree with all the above sentiments expressed and note a extra point, incompetency is incompetency across the board. Perhaps it is advanced age or just a lack of capability hidden by a one party local system for decades. Whatever the reason, Trunzo is an incompetent as Town Chairman and as a State Senator. He needs to be removed from both jobs by November 4.
HOORAY for all of you. Now go out, learn the by-laws of the GOP in Islip and sweep 3rd Avenue clean. The Islip GOP has been on a downhill slide after screwing the Conservative leadership 15 years ago. All of the players mentioned above were part of this.
AMEN!!!!
Judge Hertha Trotto's reign of terror of simply rubberstamping Orders of Protection againstmany upstanding, American citizens, who are the true victims of their wives' desires to have the husband removed because they, the wives, are engaged in extra-marital affairs is over. How many lives of men, and their innocent children have been destroyed because Ms. Trotto did not take the time to do her research as was her charge and her obligation for the office she had taken an oath to behold? Instead she simply sought the quick and easy way out and dispensed orders of protection like a Pez dispenser allowing the true victims, the fathers and children, to be separated at length causing tremendous anxiety and consternation and distress to satisfy the whimsical urges and desires of the abusive wife/"mother? Good riddance Ms. Trotto. Suffolk county's dads and children are much safer today as a result of your removal.
