Obama spent a night at Bagram in Afghanistan, met with troops and commanders, met with President Hamid Karzai, and came away with this picture.
So far, he seems to be approaching it as a senatorial listening tour -- not making pronouncements that could be controversial or seem presumptuous. McCain made an issue of foreign visits, so he's not in a position now to seriously question Obama for doing it.
And you have to wonder whether the short-term gain of emphasizing foreign travel was worth a week of photos with troops and foreign leaders and (perhaps) excited crowds in Europe. Of course, there's plenty of time left for gaffes -- Obama could be embarrassed by generals who don't agree with his plan in Iraq, or general skepticism in Israel. But so far:
