Drudge, et al: Jesse apologizes for crude ?? on Obama
Drudge headlines a story about Jesse Jackson apologizing for a "crude" remark about Obama that was caught on an open mic and will be broadcast on Fox tonight:
"Rev. Jackson trash talks Obama." Jackson's apology is after the jump. No one yet has exactly what he said, but it apparently relates to Obama lecturing black males about their responsibilities, but not lecturing America. CNN says the comment was "so crude we can't repeat it on the air."
We'll report more when the comment itself circulates. But one astute reader anticipates that this may be the best thing that ever happened to Obama in his effort to bond with mainstream America:
"Do you think that this is Obama's 'Sister Souljah' moment (where he doesn't even have to say anything)? Some may reasonably conclude: if Obama's getting 'trashed' by Jackson, he can't be all that bad. If Obama's elected, this may be seen the turning point."
Definite possibility.
Update: Here's a clue to what Jackson may have said.
Jesse Jackson:
"For any harm or hurt that this hot mic private conversation may have caused, I apologize. My support for Senator Obama_s campaign is wide, deep and unequivocal. I cherish this redemptive and historical moment.
"My appeal was for the moral content of his message to not only deal with the personal and moral responsibility of black males, but to deal with the collective moral responsibility of government and the public policy which would be a corrective action for the lack of good choices that often led to their irresponsibility.
"That was the context of my private conversation and it does not reflect any disparagement on my part for the historic event in which we are involved or my pride in Senator Barack Obama, who is leading it, whom I have supported by crisscrossing this nation in every level of media and audience from the beginning in absolute terms."_
