Assessing Nassau

With Nassau Assessor Harvey Levinson planning to retire before his term is up next year, one of his deputies has announced tentative plans to run for the $166,000 job.

And James Davis, a Baldwin Republican who has worked in the county's assessment department since 1992, has a campaign platform sure to appeal to angry Nassau voters: Reduce property assessments by 20 percent.

"I've listened to assessment contractors and out-of-state experts on staff argue for years about their formulas and models, yet, when all is said and done, over 130,000 assessment challenges have been filed this year alone," Davis said in a press release. "I say enough is enough. Let's take these expert values and reduce them by 20 percent across the board."

Davis admitted, however, he has yet to generate much political support.

Neither Nassau Republican Chairman Joseph Mondello nor Democratic Chairman Jay Jacobs returned his calls, he said.
