Skelos challenge: Labor support
For Dean Skelos, Challenge Number One is trying to win enough races in November to try to keep control of the Senate
Challenge 1a? In an insightful item on the Daily Politics, Elizabeth Benjamin notes that key labor unions that have been backing the GOP may now be up for grabs:
"Public employee unions... have long been among the chief financial supporters of the Senate Republican Campaign Committee and also provided crucial support in the form of phone banks, volunteers and other GOTV resrouces during election seasons.
"But the GOP labor support was due in large part to the unions' longstanding relationships with former Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno, who took great pains, as the state grew increasingly Democratic, to move his conference to the left, ideologically speaking, even as it angered his Conservative allies.
"Now that Bruno is gone and the Senate Democrats are in spitting distance of taking the majority, it's unclear what labor will do."
If you stick with the Republicans and the Dems take over, you lose clout. But if you help the Dems push the GOP over the brink, and then they establish permanent control in the next redistricting, you lose leverage.....
