Nassau's Mejias sticks with 'good friend' Kaiman at fete

Nassau Legis. David Mejias (D-Farmingdale) expects to be jamming at his Monday night fundraiser with North Hempstead Supervisor Jon Kaiman (right) despite a controversy surrounding his fellow Democrat’s administration.

A former town building inspector is on trial in Mineola, charged with coercing a developer to give a campaign contribution to Kaiman in return for an inspection. The developer, allegedly extorted for a $900 contribution, called Kaiman a “criminal” in his testimony. But Kaiman has denied knowledge of such a practice, and the district attorney’s office said it has no evidence Kaiman was involved in the scandal, in which five building department employees were arrested last year.

Meanwhile, Citizens for Dave Mejias e-mailed supporters a reminder of its planned “All American Grass Roots Event of the Year” at Jackie Reilly’s pub in Bethpage. “You don't want to miss Supervisor Kaiman singing with the band while Dave plays guitar. We will have food and drinks for everyone. Cost? Pay what you can afford! See you Monday!” the invitation enthuses.

Mejias denied having any qualms. “Jon’s a good friend,” he said. “He’s done nothing wrong, and the district attorney has clearly said he’s done nothing wrong. He’s still a star in Democratic party in Nassau County.”
