McCain: My Three Veeps
McCain will be meeting with three possible vice-presidents this weekend: Florida Gov. Charlie Crist (left), Louisiana's Bobby Jindal (right), and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who along with Huckabee mounted the strongest challenge to McCain.
The early favorite is probably Crist, because he was a key backer of McCain when he broke through and broke the race open in Florida, because he is a popular governor in Florida, because Florida is strategically crucial, and because every move McCain has made so far against Obama -- on Iran, on Cuba, on Colombian trade -- has been designed to help him take Florida off the board.
"If the gathering does not involve actual interviews, as some of Mr. McCain’s associates said Wednesday, it will provide Mr. McCain with a chance to know some potential running mates in a social context. Mr. McCain is known as a social and gregarious candidate and senator, and his associates said personal chemistry would be a key consideration in his choice."
