Dept. of Irony: Clinton backed ex-Panther vs. Obama

Here's a rich-with-irony video, discovered by Politico: An ad that never ran, using Bill Clinton's fulsome endorsement of Rep. Bobby Rush, when the Chicago congressman was being challenged unsuccessfully in a primary by the then-unknown Barack Obama in 2000.

It adds a little depth and texture to the Clinton-Obama competition. But there's also this: Remember how appalled Clinton and her press shop were that Obama had once had dinner with ex-Weatherman radical Bill Ayers, a politically active mainstay of his Chicago state Senate district? Well, Bobby Rush was a co-founder of the Illinois Black Panthers chapter.

So, the Clintons end up seeming a little arbitrary on the subject of 60s radicals. Ex-Weathermen are toxic (except when you want to grant them clemency). Ex-Panthers are extremely qualified to hold public office. Bill and Hillary, of course, are extraordinary political minds, so perhaps they see distinctions that others can't:
