Hillary Clinton's appearance with Bill O'Reilly yesterday night (part II is tonight) seems to have made news because of her little dig at Obama over Wright:
"He made his views clear - finally - that he disagreed [with Wright], and I think that's what he had to do."
She has been careful talking about Wright, doing it in a restrained way. After the first whirlwind of controversy, she chose Richard Mellon Scaife's newspaper to first offer a comment that she would have left the church. This time, the forum of choice for "finally" is O'Reilly.
One part of it is obvious. Hillary is now the candidate of conservative white blue-collar Democrats and women. What better way to reach out to working class white guys than through conservative papers and shows? And what better subject than Wright to bond with them on, under the approving gaze of O'Reilly?
Other than that, it's hard to see an important strategy at work. Maybe it's just coincidence that Wright came up both times. Or maybe the idea is that in fora that will be hostile to Obama, she can criticize Obama in a way that will not seem exploitive because her hosts are less measured.
