Below is a video of Sen. Clinton droppin' her g's and tellin' a folksy story in Wyomin' about a pregnant Ohio woman who lost her baby and then her life because she was uninsured and didn't have the $100 to pay a hospital to get treatment.
A NYTimes story today reports that the tale, which Clinton has repeated multiple times on the stump, is completely wrong. The woman was insured and was treated by an affiliated obstetrics practice, according to the hospital. Apparently, Hillary heard it from a deputy sheriff in Ohio who himself had heard it second hand, and she just started repeating it without checking it out:
"A Clinton spokesman, Mo Elleithee, said candidates would frequently retell stories relayed to them, vetting them when possible. 'In this case, we did try but were not able to fully vet it,' Mr. Elleithee said. 'If the hospital claims it did not happen that way, we respect that.' ”
So if they couldn't fully vet it, why did she repeat it? Why do political campaigns assume that they are not bound by normal standards of making sure what they say is the truth? What if the press did the same to them -- hear a story, don't bother to check it out, report it? They'd be appalled. But they apparently think people who want to be president of the United States can be looser with the truth if it helps them get elected.
