A couple of veterans initiatives worthy of brief note:
Last week, U.S. Reps. Steve Israel and Peter King unveiled legislation aimed at increasing resources for homeless veterans by allowing tax filers to, as they put it, "redirect up to three dollars of the taxes they've paid to the federal government for a homeless veterans fund."
Fuller Newsday coverage, and a bit of comment, is here.
Earlier this month, a fundraising gala was held for an interesting project -- the Tower of Hope, which as its officials describe it, "funds the training and care of service dogs for combat-wounded veterans returning home with double and single amputee injuries so they can live more independent lives." Apparently this is a pretty expensive task. The non-profit's link is here.
