Powell: Nice things about Obama

After going along for the Iraq ride with the Bush administration, it's not clear how much heft Colin Powell has left. But his national security resume is still better than Obama's or Hillary's, and he's still one of the nation's more prominent African-American public achievers.
So, it can't hurt when -- without endorsing (he's a Republican) -- he vouches for Obama on readiness and on Wright on ABC this morning. This helps against Clinton and, if Obama gets the nomination, against McCain.
As to lack of national security experience: “He didn’t have a lot of experience in running a presidential campaign, did he?”
And on Wright, he said the minister's inflammatory rhetoric had to be weighed against “enormous contributions to his community," and effusively praised Obama's speech:
"I think that Sen. Obama handled the issue well . . . he didn't look the other way. He didn't wait for the, for the, you know, for the storm to go over. He went on television, and I thought, gave a very, very thoughtful, direct speech. And he didn't abandon......
....the minister who brought him closer to his faith. .... I admired him for giving it. And I agreed with much of what he said."
And, for a trifecta, he also sided with Obama on the question of a presidential boycott of the opening ceremony at the Beijing Olympics. Clinton has called on Bush to boycott, Obama has called for diplomacy over Tibet and Darfur with a possible boycott on the table.
Powell: "What is accomplished by boycotting the opening ceremony? I don't think that makes the situation any better. It probably makes the situation a little more difficult for the Chinese because they will pull back even more."
He seemed to agree with the argument of both Democrats that a two-front commitment to Iraq and Afghanistan is tough for the military, but still cautioned against a precipitous withdrawal in Iraq.

Right, after the latest revelation that Powell was right there in the room at the White House discussing torture his support would be the last thing I would want. Unfortunately for Powell, his legacy has been sorely blackened. He left his scruples and integrity at the door in 2000.
