Joe Mondello, in his GOP state chairman role, tells a gathering of county chairs that he has pressed John McCain to compete in NY:
“ 'We should not just walk away from New York, that New York is a state that he could carry,' Mondello said he told McCain.
"McCain told him, 'he has no intention to walk away from New York.' ”
Of course, this is a fantasy. Even when the GOP was winning statewide races in NY, it wasn't winning electoral votes. In 2006, it got totally swept and wiped out, without a race that was even competitive. Mondello is struggling to hold onto the Senate.
But that's the point. If McCain competes, it'll help the rest of the ticket, including the Senate candidates. And they need all the help they can get.
