Judge Gazzillo quits supervisor's role in Suffolk court

Suffolk County Court Judge Ralph Gazzillo has filed his resignation, effective Friday, as supervising judge of the seven-judge court that hears the bulk of the serious criminal cases in the county.

After eight years in the unpaid post, Gazzillo, 62, of Hampton Bays, said he can’t take the extra work involved. “I get extra cases, loads of grief, and when the air conditioning breaks down, I’m the one they start looking for,” he said.

Gazzillo, a former cop, and a judge for 15 years, makes $136,700 a year, and like other judges in the state system hasn’t had a raise in 10 years. “Spitzer’s was doing to us what he did to prostitutes, only we don’t charge,” the outspoken Conservative jurist.

Court sources say the likely successor as supervising judge is C. Randall Hinrichs, a Democrat.
