Siena: Paterson unknown, popular.

Gov. Paterson does OK in a new Siena poll, with a 58-10 favorability rating one-week into his administration. Spitzer is at 13-79, Cuomo 53-25. Obama at 56-32 edges Clinton (52-43), and even leads her among white voters, with a 50-36 favorable, compared to 46-49 for Clinton.

As for the state, voters are not optimistic. Only 34 percent think NY is headed in the right direction, compared to 41 percent who think it's on the wrong track. Curiously, majorities of blacks, Latinos and NYC residents are the optimists, while whites, upstaters and suburbanites have majorities that think things are off track. See the cross tabs here.
