the Rev. Wright is a biblical scholar, & all he was doing was telling the Gospel stories in modern street language. The Gospel of Matthew particularly is pro-Jewish and very anti-Gentile -- Matthew contains stories or sayings of Jesus that alternately describe Romans (Italians) & Gentiles (everybody who's not Jewish) as swine (pigs), dogs & wolves. And of course all the Gospels finger the Romans (a/k/a Pilate & his soldiers) for crucifying Jesus. Had the Jews assassinated Jesus, they would have stoned him to death -- crucifixion was a Roman method of execution.

I don't deny that the Rev. Wright's language is insulting to Italians, but not to the extent the Gospels are. I lived in Italy for a couple of years off & on & I'm married to an Italian-born American, so I'm as pro-Italian as a non-Italian can be. I would never use the Rev. Wright's language, I don't excuse it, & I'd respectively suggest he not use racial slurs to make his points, however historically correct they might be, especially given the fact that he has borne the brunt of such slurs himself.

I am a first generation Italian American and a life long Democrat. I provided legal counsel to Democratic candidates for 25 years. My mother who came from Italy as an infant early in the 20th century, remembered the hurt inflicted on her as a child by others routinely calling her a wop or a dago. Why is no media outlet in America reporting on Rev. Wright's core beliefs. It's not like they are a mystery. He told America, in a television interview to read "James Cone" if they wanted to understand the TUCC. This is not rocket science people. James Cone is the formulator of a racist theology that calls on God to destroy the "white enemy". This is what Jeremiah Wright believes. This is why he says what he does.

It is insulting that Obama is saying this isn't important, that his speech addressed it. His speech did not address it. He efffectively changed the subject through motivational hoopla.

People who have an interest in talking about Mediterranean cultures from 2000 years ago should have some awareness that most of those cultures no longer exist in terms of the genetic make up of those peoples.
Present day Egyptians are not the same people as ancient Egyptians, and the same goes for Greece, Italy and many other countries in the region.
The cause is migrations, war moving or destroying populations, intermarriage, etc. One can easily look into this subject.
Describing present day Italians as Romans is correct only to a point for example. The Rev. Wright using cultural scenarios that appear to be taken from modern films has no bearing whatsoever on ancient cultures.
I suppose it's tempting to use modern stereotypes and stamp them on the ancients but it reveals more insights about Rev. Wright's philosophy than any glimpse into how Mediterranean cultures interacted with one another 2000 years ago.
Rev. Wright speaks as if he is the last word when it comes to peeling aways layers of reality and getting to the "truth". For me, the say and obvious fact is that Rev. Wright has more in common with the Ku Klux Klan than present day Mediterranean cultures have with their ancestors of 2000 years ago. The fact that his sharp perception cannot see even this simple comparison speaks to the intellectual depth of Rev. Wright.

A whole class of students at Princeton, at a very well thought of theological program, studying to be pastors, black and white, me and women, were very interested in Wright's sermons, identified Cone, and are interested in HIS ideas to and not at all threatened by them. Several leading pastors and rais have written in defense of Wright. And ya know what--some people are not as easily brainwashed by WORDS as you are. Jeeze. I hope there is someone out there that has a bunch of back issue because they are disappearing off of the internet. Hmmm....I wonder why? Rev. Wright wrote a column in each issue of Trumpet. Every one of his columns I have read contains his trademark anti-bush, anti-american, and, now we see with his garlic/italian comments, his bigotry and racism. Its really far-out stuff and quite extreme.

With Rev. Wright, we should judge is words, not action. Because he is a preacher, a scholar, and an orator. He preached for 35 years at that church, he wrote for Trumpet each month, and there is a long history of his thought process that pre-dates this election and all the politics. His actions today are menaingless because he has gone into hiding, thus we should judge him by those words.

We should judge Barack Obama by his actions, not words. He likely received his copies of Trumpet each issue and, being the Harvard Law Review editor, likely read each of Rev. Wright's columns. Clearly he attended his church and was member for many years. His actions of never walking out, or getting married by Rev. Wright, of having his babies baptized by him, and of not distancing himself from the racist bigot that Rev. Wright is, all add up to actions that Obama needs to be judged on. Obama's words, however, are only recent and are tinged in politics. A gifted orator, Obama's prose is very warm, inviting, hopeful, and magnetic. But being so recent, being a politician running for President makes these words meaningless and, thus actions are more important.

As the old adage says, actions speak louder than words. Lets remember this when all the past issues of Trumpet come out. Because they will come out.
