Nassau: Temporary allegiance to an abstract flag

Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi, his top aides, and members of the county legislature officially moved into their new offices at the restored Nassau courthouse (photo above) on Wednesday, but some remnants of the government were still operating out of the old offices at One West Street.

The Nassau County Planning Commission met Thursday night in the old chambers they had shared with the county legislature at One West Street. But the American flag, fire hoses, and many other removable items were already gone.

“We have no flag,” Michael Bellissimo, first vice chairman of the commission said as the meeting began. “I would ask you to stand and face where they flag used to be.”

So commissioners and audience members stood and recited the Pledge of Allegiance to a blank wall.
