McCain Woos Reporters
John McCain was cooking dozens of slabs of ribs at two enormous gas grills on the deck of a dream cabin near a swollen creek and surrounded by mountains not far from Sedona, Ariz., when his guests for a barbecue today arrived: 45 reporters covering his campaign.
Few candidates work as hard to woo the reporters who cover him as McCain. In the past he has jokingly called the news media his constituency. Most candidates tend to see such events as snake handling, interesting but the thing could bite you at any moment.
Confident about his likely victories in Tuesday’s GOP primaries, McCain spent the weekend at his compound – the Red Rock White House if he wins? Yesterday, he hosted politicians who campaigned for him. Today it was us.
McCain, dressed in blue jeans, a sweatshirt, a baseball cap and sneakers, kept the talk small, describing his homestead, pointing out signs of wildlife – the nest of a rare hawk in the crook of branches of a sycamore tree with smooth white bark, for example -- and answering questions about how he barbecues ribs.
McCain made no news and the press corps was well behaved during the two-and-a-half hour barbecue.
Attending were reporters and bloggers from the New York Times, Newsday, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Time magazine, Chicago Tribune, Boston Globe, Associated Press, Bloomberg, CNN, Fox News and the major networks, among others.
Also there were McCain’s wife Cindy, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. and his wife Mary Kaye, McCain’s neighbors and some old friends, longtime McCain aide and co-author Mark Salter, and other staffers.
I asked McCain where he got the recipe, and he said he borrowed the recipe from a late friend who started the Hog’s Breath Saloon in Florida. The recipe only works with baby back ribs, he said, adding the best place to get them is Costco.
Rub the ribs with a seasoning mix, one-third garlic, one-third salt and one-third black pepper. Cook slowly over low heat – the lowest setting on a gas grill – for about an hour or two. Turn the ribs often and frequently squeeze lemons over them to juice them to keep them from drying out.

Land deal 'mistake' piles the pressure on Obama Mr Auchi, leading supplier of arms to Saddam's regime and convicted for corruption in France, the British-Iraqi billionaire lent millions and millions of dollars to Barack Obama's fund just weeks before an imprudent land deal investigation. In addition money transfer from Nadhmi Auchi, Obama used to buy his Georgian mansion in Chicago. Mr. Auchi says the loan, through the Panamanian company Fintrade Services SA, was for $3.5 million!!!. Mr. Auchi's money was made doing business with the regime of Saddam Hussein, Mr. Auchi was a leading supplier of arms to Saddam's regime. A former Belgian ambassador to Luxembourg charged that a bank in Luxembourg owned principally by Mr. Auchi laundered funds -- including oil for food money -- for Saddam and other Islamic dictators. Auchi helped French and Italian firms win a huge oil pipeline contract in Iraq, chiefly by paying off Iraqi officials, according to testimony given by an Italian banker to prosecutors in Milan. In 2003, he was convicted for his role in what was then the largest scandal in French history, involving payoffs from executives of the oil company now known as Total to political figures in Spain, Germany and Africa.. The connection between Mr. Auchi and Sen. Obama is cause for great concern in the U.S. The national news media have been remarkably incurious about Sen. Obama's relationship with Mr. Rezko, and his with Mr. Auchi. The Obamas bought the house for $1.65 million -- $300,000 below the asking price -- perhaps because Mr. Rezko's wife purchased from the owner an adjacent garden plot for $625,000. (The sellers deny they offered the Obamas a discount.) The Times of London wondered where Mrs. Rezko got the money to buy the garden plot. At the time, she had a salary of $37,000 and assets of only $35,000, the Times learned. Her husband told a court that at the time he had "no income, negative cash flow, no liquid assets," the Times said.
