Ferraro III: An old hangup?

Ben Smith at Politico comes up with a quote from 1988, when Jesse Jackson was running strong in the Democratic primaries:

"If Jesse Jackson were not black, he wouldn't be in the race."

So, it seems like both times in the last 20 years that a black made a strong run in the Democratic primaries, Ferraro has concluded with some irritation that it was because of their blackness. But, of course, in all other presidential primaries and elections in the entire history of the country, the special value of blackness has been nonexistent.

Curious. What would it require for her to conclude that a black candidate had skills other than race to account for success?

And but for her woman-ness she wouldn't have been picked as the VP candidate in 1984.
