Democrats: Train wreck a comin'???

gallupobamhill.gif

Democrats of a mind to argue that it's terrific to have Clinton and Obama flaming away at each other every day will find some sobering news in a new Gallup poll.

Nearly one in five Obama voters (19 percent) now say they'll vote for McCain instead of Hillary. And more than a quarter -- 28 percent -- of Hillary voters now say they'll vote for McCain instead of Obama.

The divergence is itself interesting -- is the greater resistance of Hillary voters because of race, or Wright, or experience, or because white ethnic Dems are drawn to McCain? But the numbers give the lie to important pieces of spin that both candidates trot out constantly.

Hillary clearly is just dying to be president, but how can she argue that three more months of knock down, drag out fighting isn't going to hurt the party? And Obama's rise-above-divisions electability arguments seem to be an artifact of December, before the going got tough. At this point, he can't even rise above Democratic divisions, and he's at risk of losing more of them than Hillary.
