Bill Clinton compared to Joe McCarthy

It seems like a long time ago that the Democratic presidential contenders were debating health care, Iraq and the economy. Now, all the headlines seem to come from statements from the candidates or their advisors/surrogates/pastors/spouses that are either contradictory or poorly phrased or dumb.
Today, we have some backlash against Bill Clinton, who yesterday in Charlotte, NC, speculated about a race between Hillary and John McCain:
"I think it would be a great thing if we had an election year where you had two people who loved this country and were devoted to the interest of this country. And people could actually ask themselves who is right on these issues, instead of all this other stuff that always seems to intrude itself on our politics."
So what does that mean? Obama isn't patriotic? Let's keep it between white people so we don't have to get into race? Or nothing at all?
Gen. Tony McPeak, an advisor to Obama, took it badly. It reminded him of Joe McCarthy, the red-baiting senator from the 1950s who took guilt by association and slurs about loyalty to new lows: "I grew up, I was going to college when Joe McCarthy was accusing good Americans of being traitors, so I've had enough of it."
The Clinton campaign said he was misinterpreting Bill's words. But the phrasing was clumsy enough that the campaign also put a clarification up on its website saying Bill was not "falsely questioning any candidate's patriotism."

Clumsy phrasing, huh? What else can be said about Bill Clinton? I'm amazed he and his wife are actually working as a team to destroy both of their political careers.
It is obvious to anyone without an Anti-Clinton agenda that the spin provided by the Obama campaign, and as usual supported by this blog (especially Riley), is totally unrelated to what Bill Clinton actually said. What he said was, wouldn't it be nice to have a campaign about the issues, instead of the press and the spin doctors always diverting us to irrelevant stupidity - like the twisted mess Riley and his Hillary Haters have done with this blog. And I'm not even a fan of Hillary's - it just seems that her reactions to the constant attacks on her prove she's more capable of leadership than the guy who started the attacks back in Iowa and New Hampshire, but constantly whines and claims racism ever time someone gives it back to him. Ih he can't take the heat from Hillary, how is he going to survive the Republican-Conservative barrage that would come his way if he were the Democratic nominee. This blog and the Obama campaign have made it clear to me that, in order to get Team Bush and his surrogate who went to Bagdad with the Bush Vice President, I HAVE to vote for Hillary. One more thing - the Riley-Obama Team, and their spin-supporters have also convinced me that, if their candidate wins the Democratic nomination, it would be better for the country, in my opinion, if I through my vote away on Ralph Nader, than ever vote for an inexperience candidate that might make an even worse mess of this nation than the incumbent mistake - America can't afford another not-ready-for-prime-time president, and can't afford any more catastrophic errors in judgment.
Dear Outraged do you really believe that Bill wants HILLARY SOPRANO to be the next PRESIDENT?
The she is the very last person Bill wants to be president. Don't you understand that their can only be ONE who was president not TWO. Could you see Bill as First Husband have TEA. No Bill does not want to go down in history as the FIRST HUSBAND after being President for eight years. Put yourself in Bills shoes. Do you want HISTORIANS to say your WIFE was a better PRESIDENT than YOU?
I think NOT Outraged,
So Outraged you see it's BILL, stupid.
NOT HILLARY SOPRANO

Machiavelli - First I'd have to believe that Bill was that small minded, and remembering that his was the most successful presidency of my lifetime, I'm the one who thinks not (as to your speculation). Further, simply put, I don't think she could be as good a president as he was, given the times and the circumstances, she'd just be a hell of a better president than either of the other too. And yes, I think Bill would LOVE to go down in history as the first First Gentleman, a guy who overcame all the attacks and criticisms so successfully that he was able to get his wife elected the first female president, if only in his own legacy bent mind.
Dear Outraged
You need to take off those Bill covered glasses. I will say it again
IN THE END THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE WHO WAS PRESIDENT NOT TWO
OUTRAGED IT'S BILL, STUPID, NOT HILLARY SOPRANO.
We should judge a person by their actions and not their words.
The fact that Obama choose Mr. Wright as his spiritual teacher for 20 years and included Mr. Wright in his election staff speaks well for Mr. Obama’s thinking and actions. Words are easy to manipulate and it is UNLIKELY that Obama's recent race speech was written by Mr. Obama but of course his spin machine that will do anything to get him elected. And for those who haven’t done their homework regarding Michelle Obama, did you know she gets a salary of $316,962 for working at a hospital that is famous for turning away the poor because of lack of funds? That Michelle Obama has destroyed companies for profit adding thousands to the unemployment lines all while making hefty salaries to do so?
Clearly this man Mr. Obama is not to be trusted with the future of our great country. And regardless that he is ‘fashionably black’ and that many of you have some desire to prove to yourself or to others that you are not prejudice and that you like ‘black people’ with an attitude of ‘See, I like black people, I’m voting for a black person,’ such an attitude of voting for a person because of their race is the definition of prejudice.
But it seems to me if Mr. Obama had a lighter skin tone, there is no way he would be tolerated in as much he is aligned with a violent religious group, and never says anything substantial. And not only that, consider today’s announcement that the chief of the firm involved in the State Department’s passport breach is Obama’s adviser. And that Obama has been caught lying about Rezko, regarding the amount of money Rezko gave him, and that Obama still hasn't come clean about his Rezko land deal.
If Obama were to become president, what would stop Mr. Obama from appointing Mr. Wright to his cabinet? And to be sure, if anyone complained about Mr. Wright’s appointment, they would be called racist.
We should have as our country’s leader someone with wisdom and knowledge regardless of race, not someone hungry for power for the sake of power.
Out of all the 300 million people in America, is this really who you want for president? If ever there was a potential Anti-Christ, we are looking at him.
