Given the charged responses by Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno and his Investigations Chairman George Winner to Albany District Attorney David Soares’ explosive “Troopergate” report, you can bet Republicans are looking to squeeze the disgraced Eliot Spitzer’s misdeeds for an electoral edge.
But nobody seems to have pinned down how much the Spitzer administration may have helped advertise the ongoing federal probe of Bruno’s business affairs. One insider suggested Spitzer’s office kept close contact with U.S. officials, but another noted the investigation started by 2004. By all accounts, Bruno loyalists remain nervous.

Dan, The only people who know how much Spitzers Administration help advertised it ARE REPORTERS. They are the ones taht get the LEAKS or INSIDE STUFF. Now maybe someone should do a story on the reporters who wrote the stories ?????
BTW I will say it again Joe Bruno & Joe Mondello need to resign
The Republican Senate & Party needs NEW YOUNG LEADERSHIP.
This new leadership needs to say WE ARE REPUBLICANS.
REPUBLICANS NEEED TO SAY THEY ARE REPUBLICANS.
I AM SICK AND TIRED OF SEEING REPUBLICANS RUNNING FOR OFFICE AND NO WHERE ON THEIR LIT OR TV ADS ETC SAY THEY ARE REPUBLICANS OR VOTE REPUBLICAN.
REPUBLICANS RUNNING ON THE REPUBLICAN LINE NEED TO SAY LOUD AND CLEARLY I AM A REPUBLICAN AND PROUD OF IT.
Is your theory that Spitzer had enough clout with the Bush Justice Dept. to get them to go after Bruno but not enough clout to protect himself when the DOJ went after him?
Yoda: No, I wouldn't speculate that Spitzer got DOJ to GO AFTER Bruno. My point is this: it stands to reason, knowing what we do now, that the ex-governor would have wanted any pre-existing federal activities to become publicized, leaked, gossiped about, Stories on the FBI probe don't seem to hit Albany until late 2006 -- a bit after Spitzer's election. And that investigation story was one hot poker for the Senator to endure.
