Hill $$ woes: Pay holiday for top staff
More on the Clinton cash crisis, and Hillary's $5 million loan:
The Clinton campaign has confirmed that several top staffers, including campaign manager Patti Solis Doyle (left), are deferring paychecks to help keep her competitive. (Meanwhile, this story says Obama may be on pace for another $30 million month -- he's raised $2.2 million in the last 24 hours.)
But here's the thing: The story starts out this morning with a blind item on a well-connected website about a possible loan. Then reporters ask about it, as they're supposed to. The Clinton campaign says it's having a great day with money, and starts trying to cast Obama as the "establishment," themselves as the little insurgents that could. Then the campaign comes back and confirms the loan, which occurred last month.
Now, staffers are going without pay! Because they believe in the cause of Hillary! While they try to desperately raise money! They're the underdog! Fightin' Hill, just as Obama hits a good stretch where Clinton may have a hard time competing anyway! A built in excuse if she loses in Nebraska, or Louisiana, or Virginia, or Wisconsin -- and if she wins, wow!! A stunning upset on a shoestring!
Here's what one blog wrote before the loan was confirmed: "Perceptually, it could turn her into an underdog, and it could prove Obama's statement today that Clinton is 'the frontrunner' to be vacuous....The move could help with her grassroots fundraising. She'd be able to show potential donors than she will sacrifice as she's asking them to sacrifice. One can imagine a fundraising appeal along the lines of: 'Help Us Match HIllary!' "
Sorry to be cynical, but the whole story today sounds a little rolled out, planned and themed -- such a happy coincidence that it emerged the day after the primary, when they're trying to raise money, instead of the day before, when it might have made voters think twice.
And we think the Clintons will somehow be able to raise enough to keep running -- even if Bill has to partner up with Ron Burkle again, or give some $500,000 speeches to the Global Society of Influence Seekers, or go on another uranium prospecting trip to Kazakhstan.

planned? absolutely, Barack Obama just paid off his student loans 3 years ago, and only because his book did well. The Clinton are worth millions! and Hillary continues to take millions from corporate lobbyists. And then there's all the uncounted independent expenditures, including dirty attack ads, being run by the Clinton machine. Do the right thing, read what both of these candidates have written, listen closely, and you'll see how GOOD Obama is for this country, now!
Lets see Rudy had a cash crunch, now HILLARY SOPRANO has a CASH CRUNCH. She had to 'LOAN" money to her campaign.

I doubt this is a case of tactical subterfuge. Obama has built his financial war chest with small donations from many motivated, web savvy, contributers who are likely to give again and again without exceeding any campaign finance limit.
Hillary by contrast has relied on large contributions from a a much smaller pool of wealthy members of the Democratic and lobbying establishment. These contributers have or soon will have reached their legal limits. Barack benefists from his position at the top of the heap in terms of web reach, while Hillary is far behind in this aresa.
Conspiracy theories about the Clinton Campaign's disclosure of Hillary's decision to personally loan her campaign $5 million are interesting, but applying Occam's razor suggests something more obvious: Hillary really is, and will continue to be, financially challenged in the face of Obama's infectious grass roots Campaign of Hope.
