Day after: McCain/Obama skirmishing

A surprising amount of Obama vs. McCain action today -- actually, it started with some shots in their victory speeches last night -- given that neither man has locked up a nomination yet. For McCain you can understand it, but for Obama looking ahead looks presumptuous.

Anyway, a sampling.

McCain, in Washington, goes after Obama pretty much the same way Hillary has tried to go after him, as a talker without substance:

"There's going to come a time when we're going to have to get into specifics. I have not observed every speech he has given obviously, but they are singularly lacking in specifics." And, on Tuesday night: "To encourage a country with only rhetoric rather than sound and proven ideas that trust in the strength and courage of free people is not a promise of hope. It is a platitude."

Obama, in a Wisconsin speech, used McCain's comments about not being an economic expert in pretty much the same way Mitt Romney did:

"John McCain is a great American hero, a war hero, we honor his service. But economics is not his strong suit. I mean he said I don’t understand economics very well and after what he said it shows because his main economic philosophy is to continue the same tax breaks that George Bush has been perpetuating over the last seven years and that the fact guess who? John McCain criticized as irresponsible back when he wasn’t running for President ...Somewhere along the line he traded those principles for his party’s nomination and now he is for those tax cuts."

And then, there's this from McCain's campaign manager Rick Davis about Obama's recent ranking from National Journal as the "most liberal" senator:

"Now, I don’t know if all 17,000 of those people who were in his audience [last night in Madison, Wisc.] know that, but they will. I promise you that by the end of this campaign that’ll be right there on your refrigerator on one of those magnets."
