Spitzer's 'No' to Nassau's Levinson on taxes

Nassau County Assessor Harvey Levinson had one of his top ideas blown out of the water this week by Gov. Eliot Spitzer.

Levinson wants an income tax to help fund school districts, but Spitzer said the panel he appointed to study property taxes would not consider an income tax as part of its mandate.

Amazing. As if the people of Nassau County aren't already overtaxed. Now the Assessor wants to add an Income Tax for the County? Perhaps Mr. Levinson should study the effects of regressive taxes on a local economy. Less taxes, less government, less regulation and less spending are the things that will make a difference in Nassau County. On this one, it looks like Sptizer has it RIGHT.

Harvey has it right. Tax the people who are making the big bucks. The current system does not work. Period.

Harvey has it wrong. We pay enough in property taxes. Do you think the income tax will replace the property tax? Absolutely not.
It will just be added to our overwhelming tax burden. It will be used to choke out middle income households out of Long Island.

What Nassau County needs is common sense. They can cut property taxes by 15% just by eliminating the redundant town governments and have their functions taken over by the County.

Further reductions could occur by combining school districts or at least have them combine for certain functions, like bulk purchasing.
