Ted, Patrick and Caroline Kennedy just finished endorsing Obama -- handing him the mantle of the new JFK pretty explicitly -- in a big campaign event at American University in DC. How far will it take him? We'll see over the next eight days.
Meanwhile, ever since this story broke over the weekend, we've been wondering about a related question. The Kennedys are a clan, usually pretty tight. So why are the Jack and Teddy parts of the family going with Obama, while three of Bobby Kennedy's kids -- Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, Robert Kennedy Jr., and ex-Cuomo-wife Kerry Kennedy -- are in the Hillary camp.
Well, a reader has come up with a pretty good thought. It has to do with Bobby Jr. -- a noted environmentalist in the Hudson Valley and, some think, a man with lurking political ambitions. Writes our correspondent:
"What's at stake with the dueling Kennedys here? Well, Kathleen's brother, Robert Jr., is often mentioned as a possible name to fill a vacant Senate seat, especially for his father's old seat. That would be the one held by the Junior Senator from New York. Of course, she would have to go on to something else before the seat could become vacant!
"It's surprising the Kennedy family isn't together on this one. They usually march in lockstep - especially when the prospect of getting their hands on another Senate seat is in question. The others must be really pissed at Bill for his attacks on Obama."
