Factcheck: More inflation of the legend of Hillary

hilcloseup.jpeg

Sometimes it seems like Hillary Clinton feels free to seize from any of the world events she had contact with during eight years as the president's wife in the White House, declare that she "was involved in" or "helped" on it, and thereby establish that she has vast background as a leader ready to handle any crisis.

The reality of the portrait she's selling has been challenged before -- on claims to foreign policy experience and creation of a children's health care program, for example. Here's a fact check on another one of her "Ready from Day One" claims -- that she played an important role in bringing peace to Northern Ireland, with assistance of course from that president of the United States that happened to be her husband.

The Washington Post's Fact Checker concludes -- what a surprise! -- that the ex-First-Lady has been "overstating her significance as a catalyst in the Northern Ireland peace process, which was more symbolic than substantive." Negotiator George Mitchell says she was "not involved" in negotiations, but did some work trying to encourage Catholic-Protestant bridge building; a Belfast reporter says she provided "mood music."

The fact check follows a Boston Globe story on the same subject that finds Clinton has been offering a far more dramatic and elaborate retelling of her Northern Ireland experiences on the campaign trail than she did in her 500-page autobiography.
