Congress hopeful Zeldin runs into foe, minor-party bigs

Republican Lee Zeldin, who wants to run for Congress, was entering a Riverhead restaurant Friday when he said he saw his potential opponent, Rep. Tim Bishop (photo left), lunching with two minor party bosses whose endorsement Zeldin would sorely need if he has any chance of success.

Bishop was breaking bread with Suffolk Conservative Party Chairman Edward Walsh and state and county Independence Party Chairman Frank MacKay at Digger O'Dell's.

Walsh, whose party has never endorsed the Southampton Democrat, said he does not expect to back Bishop for his next race or "anytime in the next century" -- but had made no committment to Zeldin, a Shirley lawyer who recently returned from military service in the Mideast, or any other Republican candidate.

Of his meeting with Bishop, he said "I talk to everyone and try to push them to be more conservative." MacKay declined to comment.

Zeldin meanwhile has already sent out....

...a fundraising mailing to 50,000 and so far has gotten 750 donors but only breaking even on the $30,000 cost. He hopes to raise $10,000 to $15,000 at Monday's event at the Nassau Bar Association in Garden City. He also said that he has a Jan. 14 fundraiser in the works with former Sen. Alfonse D'Amato at Chateaubriand in Nassau.
