Which was the most fevered lunge for self-promotion by a power player?
1. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke declaring that “unfair and deceptive acts and practices... have no place in our mortgage system.”
2. New York City Councilman Jim Gennaro (D-Queens), a likely state Senate candidate, referring to himself Bob Dole-style: “There’s not a person in this room who can say that Jim Gennaro hasn’t been fair with them.”
3. Nassau Legis. Francis Becker (R-Lynbrook) saying, “We're severely underpaid and we're asking for a raise so we can send our kids to college.”

Mr. Becker, the solution is simple. Don't run for reelection. I'm sure many others from both parties will be happy to run for your seat at the salary that is presently offered. $39,000 for a PART-TIME job sounds pretty good to me. The work you do may be worth more, but think how many of your constituents are also underpaid; without the ability to vote themselves a raise. Shame on you, sir.
Mr. Becker is typical of those nominated and elected to political office. His has his hand out. These are part-time positions, yet these people want full-time salaries, complete with extensive and expensive benefits and full pensions. I urge Mr. Becker not to ever run for office again if he cannot afford to serve. I am a loyal Republican but his comments are a disgrace and he should be ashamed of himself. Why did he want to get elected to this office if he was unhappy with the salary assigned to the position? Personally, I would rather have a Board of Supervisors than the present 19-person legislature.
