Democratic voter registration continues to inch toward Republican enrollment levels in Nassau, reports Democratic Elections Commissioner William Biamonte.
As of November, 305,863 Democrats were registered in the county compared to 327,880 Republicans, giving the GOP an enrollment edge of about 22,000, Biamonte said. Last year, registered Republicans outnumbered Democrats by about 34,000, he said. In 1998, there were 100,000 more registered Republicans than Democrats in what was once a major GOP stronghold.
Biamonte said the biggest jumps in Democratic registrations have occurred in the years of the last two presidential elections. “Guess what’s coming up,” he said, predicting: “In 18 to 24 months the Democrats will be the majority party in Nassau County — which is remarkable.”
