Two Suffolk corrections officers allegedly involved in a sign stealing incident in the Southampton supervisor’s race have been cleared.
Gary Meyerricks, undersheriff, said an internal affairs investigation was done but no charges brought against the men because there were no witnesses who saw any wrongdoing. “From the people we talked to, no one saw anything that would cause the sheriff to take action,” he said.
A Quogue police officer had found a sign for GOP Southampton supervisor candidate Linda Kabot in the back of a pick-up truck occupied by two off-duty correction officials, who are members of the Conservative party, and retired correction officer William Friese, a Conservative Party vice chairman. Kabot’s opponent, the Conservative-backed incumbent GOP supervisor Patrick “Skip” Heaney, lost on election night.
