Smithtown: 'Get Osama' guy is also chicken-suit guy

In case you wondered, the man behind the “Get Osama” license plate story is the same man who wears a chicken suit to Smithtown Town Hall meetings.
Arno Herwerth drew notice last week for his reluctance to return to the Department of Motor Vehicles his personalized “Get Osama” license plate, which the DMV had approved and sent.
While some glimpse him for the first time, viewers to the town’s government channel know him as the faithful supporter of the owners of Angel’s Gate, an animal hospice that was prohibited by the town for caring for its 200-plus animals in a Fort Salonga home. Herwerth showed up at just about every meeting wearing a yellow and red chicken suit (specifically, a rooster suit) with a sign: “Smithtown Town Board Chickened Out on Angel’s Gate.”
Angel’s Gate has since won a lawsuit against the town. A decison said it had the right to stay in its home. The town is appealing.
Herwerth said he used the chicken suit while he was a New York City police officer to protest the pay, with signs that read “NYPD pay is for the birds.”
“I once wore a Superman suit and a sign that read, ‘Lois Lane left me for a well-paid Nassau cop.’ It brings a smile to your face and gets the word out... a light-hearted way to get your point across.” The painted van...
Stacey Altherr
... and license plates are different, he said. “I will not make fun of 9-11,” he said, saying those expressions of self come from his patriotism.
Councilwoman Patricia Biancaniello said she saw the license-plate story in Newsday, but didn’t make the connection to the man in the chicken suit until he was interviewed on television. “I didn’t recognize the name, but then I saw him on Channel 12,” said Biancaniello. “I was surprised, to say the least.”

Now that the DMV is trying to take back the "Get Osama" license plate they themselves issued, are they going to go after President Bush for his post-September 11 pledge to
"Get Osama, Dead or Alive" ?
Why doesn't the DMV do something useful for a change----such as see to it that dangerous drivers, whose licenses they routinely "suspend" and "revoke", do not conntinue driving ---as hundreds or thousands of them routinely do; sometimes killing innocent, law-abiding people ?
very good point richard. it's funny, when i was a cop i arrested hundreds of people for driving with suspended licenses. often times it's the start of a person's downfall. sometimes they're using drugs or "shopping" to steal cars and you get them for the license suspension and from there you get other charges. soon, dmv may place me among the unlicensed, and alot of my past collars are probably grinning at that............ i like standing up for things, whether it's bringing attention to bin laden or helping animals, i'll never stop. i like this spin story from newsday. it reminds me of my old relationship with newsday. in 1989 i got help from newsday reporter joe queen, when i was having trouble getting the nypd to clean the asbestos out of our station house in the south bronx. it was hanging off the pipes in our lounge etc. and joe made some calls after receiving my pictures of it and it was quickly cleaned up. 1 police plaza didn't care when i called, but as soon as joe did, then it mattered to them. the media at its best...........rip joe

Reg: "GETOSAMA " Licence plates.
I think NYS DMV should re -consider their decision to issue and validate the above plates..I hope I LIVE In AMERICA THAT IS MY HOME NOW !!!
DMV/OFFICIALS SHOULD NOT CONSIDER IT AS A PERSONAL INSULT OF THEIRS' IN REVERSING THEIR PRESENT STAND..
HOPEFULLY, PUBLIC OPINION WILL PREVAIL OVER THE PERSON/S RESPONSIBLE FOR DENYING THE "GETOSAMA" PLATES TO THE NEW YORK'S FINEST...
NOT DOING SO, WILL ONLY PROVE THE HIPPOCRATIC FUNCTIONING OF OUR PUBLIC SERVICES.
TREVOR

sorry about the repeat post, my computer skills are lagging.
thank you trevor. the finest, i miss the uniform...........and dmv will definitely bend their position, but not for my benefit, theirs.
my leafletting for 9/11 memorial plates has begun. dmv's moratorium is wrong, just like the losing battle they are fighting against that children first, custom plate. the legislature gave them too much power to decide what's acceptable and what's not. driver licenses to illegal aliens, pro al-qaeda attitude, dmv/spitzer, need to get taken down a notch.
ARNO WE WORKED TOGETHER IN BAYSIDE THE STATE OF NC HAS JUST ISSUED ME GETOSAMA LICENSE PLATE
outstanding, rich!!!!!! i hope everyone in the country does it, we should pose for a picture with our plates!!!! i'll fly to you. call me -631 495-8120.
i handed out some leaflets inside the hauppauge dmv today while also showing the dmv customers the very offensive 'GETOSAMA' plate. no one took offense and they were happy to read my anti-dmv/spitzer letter. i'll be hitting some more long island dmv's and the pakistan embassy in nyc. after all, they are harboring osama.
i'm hoping my state senator will have an opinion on whether he supports the message "getosama" on a license plate. so far, his staff speaks for him- "he has no comment". i will never trust a man that has no comment, especially on the topic of bin laden. mr. flanagan, are you a coward?
i did a little protesting at the pakistani consulate on 65th street in manhattan on new year's day. "pakistan- give up osama"
someone in florida now has 'getosama' license plates. there's probably more states with them, too. dmv can hear the footsteps, i'm sure........... i did more leafletting today at dmv, and this weekend looks good to protest the pakistani consulate.
Hey Arno! How are things going? Remember I told you about the Iraq Vet and his quest? Well, he and a fellow Fathers 4 Justice fellow were peacefully protesting outside the state capitol in Missouri this past Friday. They got interviewed by a TV Reporter and were on the KOMU news in Columbia, Missouri. One of them was wearing a super-hero outfit. It reminded me of you !
Hope all is well. M
hey cuz. after leaving a large rally for the writers on wednesday i walked up to my parking attendant and handed him my ticket. as i waited for my vehicle wearing a superman costume, i wondered how wild it would look when he pulled up to me in my red, white and blue mini van.......... my sign- "viacom- you are our kryptonite"
That Viacom comment is great! I just read the NY Times article from Jan 13th; I thought it was excellent and very well written. Hope all is well and we'll see you at the Cape sometime soon. - Marta
okay cuz, but we gotta do somethin about uncle teddy drinkin and wearin my chicken suit and then runnin down route 6a lookin for hot wings and chicks. next time, it'll be on the front page of the cape cod times!!!!!!!!!
back at the pakistani consulate today. two people entering the consulate stated to me "there's no proof that bin laden is in pakistan" and "he's at the white house". this after viewing my sign- " PAKISTAN GIVE UP BIN LADEN". however, many people supported my message as i walked 65th street.
after saying i should have stuck to bumper stickers when i offered to give the plates to a disabled veterans group, dmv may finally be seeing their mistakes. they appear close to totally surrendering their ridiculous position.
I had not heard of this story before today. Arno I think you have the right idea. I would like to get a copy of your leaflet. How do I get your email address??
rick, call me at 631 495 8120. i'd like to get all the charitable groups like childhood cancer, 9/11 and survivor of the bravest etc. to join together in a class action lawsuit against dmv. dmv is blocking almost all new legislative and organizational custom plates because of their ongoing unrelated 1st amendment case involving a choose life plate. that case is many years old and is dragging on with no end in site. other states have lost their battles to block this same type of plate and it appears that nys will also lose. regardless of your feelings about a choose life plate, dmv should not be blocking other charitable groups like childhood cancer groups from raising money to end cancer in kids just because they fear losing an unrelated lawsuit. FLORIDA HAS RAISED 100 MILLION DOLLARS WITH THEIR SAVE THE PANTHER PLATES SINCE ITS INCEPTION, BUT NYS SAYS TO HELL WITH KIDS SUFFERING FROM CANCER. i think things need to change at nys dmv!
i just wrote a long entry and i must have hit an erase button, i think. oh well, my response is now somewhere in hyperspace.
test
these plates were denied yesterday by dmv- 911NOPL8 AND NO911PL8. they were requested to show that nys dmv is not allowing the 9/11 remembrance plate that sen. lavalle's bill described. dmv told me that personalized plates will not be issued if there is a reference to 9/11. if 9/11 is your birthday or you own a porsche 911 then you can get a plate that has 911 in it. that is a quote from a manager at nys dmv's custom plate unit. my requests, criticize dmv's moratorium on the 9/11 remembrance plate and they said there are hundreds of other people on a waiting list to receive plates with 911 on them. there is no end in sight, though. dmv is siting their legal battle of blocking an adoption group's "choose life" custom plate as the reason why most other charitable plates are on hold (end childhood cancer, survivor of the badges etc.). however, dmv recently allowed the giants superbowl custom plate and a library plate. are these plates more important than the 9/11 plate? to dmv, maybe they are................ i feel if oklahoma and florida have these charitable 9/11 plates then certainly nys should, as well.
i guess, one day dmv will get around to answering the suit.
nys dmv- 2008 winner of a jefferson 1st amendment muzzle award, and they tried to lie their way out of it!...................... dmv, answer my lawsuit already or comply with it, i'm not going away.
almost 7 years now and still no 9/11 memorial plates in nys- but mob references on personalized plates goes unchecked. exactly WHO is running dmv? criminals?
the case is done, the plates are on the car. thank you for your fair articles, stacey. my lawyer, vincent amicizia, did a great job and took no crap from the state. in the end, the dmv supervisor who pulled the plates was the one who expressed mailed the regy to me for christmas. a nice gesture goes a long way with me in these times of unending societal rudeness. i hope that osama is dead soon and i'm glad that dmv actually helped me make some noise about the fact that we haven't gotten him yet. dmv did me a favor. the plates, un-pulled, would have gotten only minimum attention. and once they mistakenly pulled them, their own stubborn nature only angered people more. thank you dmv, for pulling them and then reinstating them. anyone have any more ideas on how to bring attention to osama? because, if we forget about him, he'll be back. we need to "get" him........................
the next battle the dmv will lose is the choose life plates. dmv has been stalling this case because it knows it will fall just like all the other states did. the 1st amendment is a powerful thing no matter how you feel about the abortion issue. please fight for what you believe in and your right to say it! and, we deserve our 9/11 remembrance plates, also.
