The furor over Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s plan to give driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants may not produce the windfall that Republicans were hoping for.
In at least one high-profile race upstate, the issue got plenty of airing but didn’t win the day.
In Erie County, which includes Buffalo, incumbent county clerk Kathleen Hochul, a Spitzer appointee, won re-election by a large margin. She opposes the governor’s license plan but that didn’t keep Republican challenger William A. O’Loughlin from bringing it up as an issue.
