Before the Republican event last night featuring Rudy Giuliani in Patchogue, Brookhaven Supervisor candidate Robert DiCarlo told an inquiring visitor that he hadn't seen the former mayor since he'd left office. They'd known each other well in DiCarlo's days as a Brooklyn pol, however, and GOP county leader, and Giuliani attended his wedding 12 years ago, the candidate noted.
When it came time to address the rally of local candidates, Giluiani singled out DiCarlo for thanks, for helping make him mayor back in the day.
DiCarlo predicted he'd win his race today, based on taxes, housing for illegals, and other issues.
When Giuliani slammed Spitzer during his speech, that was comfortable territory as well. Back in City Hall, he supported the GOP's former state AG Dennis Vacco against Spitzer. The two former prosecutors even traded shots after Spitzer compared Giuliani to Girolamo Savonarola, the 15th century Florentian who preached against corruption but was revealed later as an obstinate fanatic and ended up being executed.
Suffolk GOP Chairman Harry Withers, who hosted the election-eve pep session, fondly recalled past contacts with the presidential candidate and lavished him with praise in his introduction.
Dan Janison
Withers noted that Suffolk was the first major county in the nation to endorse Giuliani for president, and declared "We are going to be here for him for the Feb. 5 primary, we will have voluteers who will go to New Hampshire -- some will go to Florida."
At a couple of humorous points in Withers' intro, Rudy did the bunch-shouldered, crinkle-eyed, giant-grin courtesy laugh that makes it seem as if he’s been told the most
fantastic joke in the world.
"There were many reasons we backed the mayor," Withers said. "First of all, he believes in party building...And this is not new...I remember when he came out here before, he was not running for president....As mayor we saw what he did.
"He reduced welfare. He reduced crime. He reduced taxes. He reduced the unemployment. He was a great mayor – and that’s just a preview of what he’s going to do as president.”
“This man standing right in the middle, is blocking Hillary from the White House," Withers declared.

RE: Rudy Defends Kerik Yesterday
Kerik romances his book publisher in the building across the street from the World Trade Center, while we work below him on the disaster on the rockpile below him.
Kerik does not obtain “Top Secret Clearance” from the FBI as NYPD Police Commissioner for Joint Federal Cases, knowing he could not cut muster in doing so.
Kerik ’s college degree is an “On-Line” degree and he declares bankruptcy.
Kerik’spends time in the back seat of his police car writing on his memoirs instead of tending to police business.
Kerik’s ties to the mob and their associates.
How is it every Detective on the NYPD knew this guy was a misfit except Rudy?
We all knew that this guy was nothing but a “Bootlick” for Rudy with NO credentials at all to hold serious positions of leadership.
Karl Rove had to know this also. Rove had to know that Kerik would self distrust within 48 hours of being appointed to his Federal position. (Which happened by the way)
