Mike Fishman, president of the union 32BJ/SEIU representing janitors and building workers, has issued a letter stating it was "with great dismay" that he heard of Sen. Craig Johnson's opposition to Gov. Eliot Spitzer's change of drivers' license policies.
"Your main concern that a driver's license may create a presumption of legal residency is unfounded," Fishman wrote. "If it is celar that in New York state _ along with seven other states -- drivers' licenses will be issued to people regardless of immigration status, the driver's license should not create such a presumption."
Citing the desirre to "bring people out of the shadows and into the system" and make the system more fraud-proof, as well as lower insurance rates by increasing the pool of registered drivers, Fishman called Johnson's opposition "not productive."
The union's position on the issue is posted here.

The SEIU is full of ILLEGAL ALIENS ! I believe Unions as well as employers should be held accountable for knowingly aidding and abetting Illegal Aliens. The recent support of the AFL/CIO has made me quit my Union membership after 39 Yrs. They are a Disgrace to every American who put their jobs on the line to build them !
Interesting... you know, the guy who had Sen. Johnson's seat before him, the Honorable Michael Balboni, is now Chief of New YorkLand Security, and he states that the drivers' licenses will PROTECT our safety on about five different levels, even give us a wider risk pool for auto insurance costs - oh, yeah, we'd also know things like where they live, how to send them their IT-201's (providing of course that they make enough minimum wage to be filing a return), etc.
So I wonder why a guy who's APPOINTED seems to be OK with Spitzer's plan and has the facts to back it up?
Those elected guys aren't trying to get lots of free airtime outta this, are they?
Hmmmmm....
I agree with "Hey Youse Guys." Craig Johnson is horrible; a total pandering fool. I desperately want to see the Democrats take over the Senate, but not with the dishonorable Craig Johnson. I hope he and his nasty, disrespectful staff get about 20% of the vote next time. Give me McKevitt or Walker any day. I'd rather have an honest Republican than a sleazy Democrat. Craig Johnson would resign if he had any honor. Hey, can we get Spitzer to give us back Balboni?
