Here's a bit more on former Sen. Alfonse D'Amato standing in for Rudy Giuliani in debate rehearsals with his preferred candidate, Fred Thompson.

... to show how easy it was to buy crack. The two men had a falling out when Giuliani wanted to say who would replace him as U.S. attorney in New York, but the real split came in 1994, when Giuliani endorsed Democrat Mario Cuomo for governor over D’Amato’s hand-picked choice, Republican George Pataki.
Thirteen years might sound like a long time, but D’Amato doesn’t seem to have forgotten -- though he denied any anti-Rudy animus back in the spring when he endorsed Thompson.
As for Thompson getting himself in fighting shape, Slate does some analysis here.
