Former Sen. Al D'Amato, who has famously butted heads in the past with former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, has been acting as the "stand-in" for the GOP frontrunner in debate rehearsals conducted by the campaign of Fred Thompson, whom the famous Long Island Republican supports for president. The richness of this moment was not lost on Sam Roberts of the Times, who provides the context here.

It's amusing to hear Alfonse D'Amato refer to anyone as "amoral."
Alfonse D'Amato wrote the book on political expediency and opportunism.
Let's not forget that Alfonse, a hack, local, machine politician from Hempstead, challenged Jacob Javits, a statesman, in a Republican primary for the US Senate. In some circles, that would be regarded as an act of extreme disloyalty. But not to Alfonse. He wrote the book on self-gratification.
In Al's world, there's only one ethic - the world according to Al. Remember Al supporting Spitzer for governor? Was anyone shocked to see the hack Republican supporting a Democrat? It was easy for Al. Business is business, and Al is, after all, a "legitimate businessman."
Bottom line: Al is an embarrassment to anyone he represents. Mr. Thompson should pay less attention to the money Al brings to the table and more attention to this man's lack of character and ethics.
