Suffolk's van fleet has political opinions

vanpic1.jpg

We were driving to Hauppauge today, minding our own business, when we pulled up behind a white Suffolk County van with an interesting sign in its back window: Impeach Congress. The van, with official New York State plates and a Suffolk County seal, parked in front of the Medical Examiner's building on Veterans Parkway, where we took its picture.

Ed Dumas, the spokesman for County Executive Steve Levy, said the van in question is assigned to a county health department pool in Yahpank, but he does not know who was driving or how the sign got there.

"We're going to begin an investigation," Dumas said. "It's an intolerable sitaution. This is an inappropriate venue to espouse political statements."

Dumas said it's the van driver's responsibility to make sure the vehicle is free of political statements. For what it's worth, there's a faded "Suffolk County Supports Our Troops" ribbon on van's other rear door.

Yes, that's funny.

It's good to see that someone in county gov't has a mind of their own. Go get 'em.

Okay, you're right -- these kind of things are inappropriate. However, I am so disappointed our paper focuses too much on this time of thing and not enough on the issues that impact disadvataged people. You are in such a powerful postion to help them. It is okay to use that power to do good.

Sorry, Newsday! I meant to type ...."your paper focuses"...and ...."this type of thing"...
