Obama: Sneezy or Sleepy?

In the spin room of last night’s Democratic debate at Dartmouth, the off-the-record chit-chat was about Barack Obama, who was a little more laid back -- actually a lot more laid back -- than the attack mongers in the press (like me) expected.

There were several explanations for his less than sparky performance, posited by a dozen or so enemy spinsters we interviewed: 1. He wanted Edwards to do his dirty work by attacking Clinton for him. 2. He’s waiting for some sort of bump in the Iowa polls in the wake of his recent $500,000 ad buy there 3. True to his word, he’s an apostle for a more thoughtful brand of politics and isn’t comfortable with being mean.

Obama’s strategist David Axelrod said he liked his guy’s performance and wasn’t making excuses, but…
“He was suffering from a pretty bad head cold,” Axelrod told reporters. “He was hacking and wheezing but in this business you play with injuries.”

We weren’t able to perform a Strep test, but Obama didn’t look so bad to us a few hours before the debate began when we spied him stepping out of his SUV at Hanover’s Residence Inn, laughing loudly into a cell phone with no sign of post-nasal congestion.

He was, in fact, wearing workout togs: shorts, a T-shirt and running shoes.

YALE SCIENTISTS MAKE 2 GIANT STEPS IN ADVANCEMENT OF QUANTUM COMPUTING, September 26 Two major steps toward putting quantum computers into real practice sending a photon signal on demand from a qubit onto wires and transmitting the signal to a second, distant qubit have been brought about by a team of scientists at Yale. The accomplishments are reported in sequential issues of Nature on September 20 and September 27, on which it is highlighted as the cover along with complementary work from a group at the National Institute of Standards and Technologies. NIST DEBUTS SUPERCONDUCTING QUANTUM COMPUTING CABLE, September 26 Physicists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology have transferred information between two "artificial atoms" by way of electronic vibrations on a microfabricated aluminum cable, demonstrating a new component for potential ultra-powerful quantum computers of the future. The setup resembles a miniature version of a cable-television transmission line, but with some powerful added features, including superconducting circuits with zero electrical resistance, and multi-tasking data bits that obey the unusual rules of quantum physics.
