Is the Conservative Party primary in Nassau’s 3rd Legislative District a big deal?
Here are the numbers from the 2005 general election, when the same candidates ran.
Incumbent John Ciotti, 6,013 on the Republican line.
Challenger Ali Mirza, 5,694 on the Democratic line.
Ciotti wins by 319 votes, major parties only.
But, Ciotti picked up 407 on the Conservative line and 284 on the Independence line, for an additional 691 votes.
Mizra got 186 votes on the Working Families line.
Bottom line?
Ciotti 6,704; Mizra 5,880.
Ciotti wins by 824.
Ciotti is in danger of losing the Conservative Primary Tuesday. He was knocked off the line by Harold Barberi, a newly registered Conservative who was a registered Democrat just last year. Ciotti has a write-in slot on voting machines because he got by filing an Opportunity to Ballot.
Mix and match those 2005 third-party tallies to your hearts content, but they spell trouble for Ciotti.
Two more stats: The district has 18,221 registered Democrats and 12,067 Republicans.

The Opportunity to Ballot is just that. A voter could write in any name.
The dems have registered over 100 new conservatives (former dems) in the Ciotti district. Going to be tough for Ciotti. Bogsted has been asleep at the switch for quite awhile now.
Suozzi and Jay Jacobs have almost accomplished the complete neutering of the Nassau Conservative Party and are in a position to take it over by removing Bogsted in the next election for leader.
By giving Bogsted and his cronies jobs in the County, Suozzi has lulled Bogsted to sleep and is now springing the trap.
Bogsted better win these primaries or he and a REAL Conservative party is finished in Nassau. Mike Long should then revoke their charter and let the Suffolk conservatives run Nassau as well as a Long Island Conservative Committee.
Real conservatives are embarrassed by Bogsted acting like a lap dog to liberal dems Suozzi and Jacobs and giving liberal dem judges the conservative endorsement.
The Republicans in Suffolk many years ago tried to take over the Conservative Party in Islip Town. Elaine Leerer, the leader at the time, had a hearing, subpoened the new Conservatives and embarassed the Republican leadership. The attempt to wrest control of the party fizzled and she became the County Chairman. May I suggest a scheme of the same order by Mr. Bogsted if he has the fortitude of those leaders who have gone before.
I won't predict what will happen this year but your numbers the last time show that neither the Conservatives no the IP had anything to do with Ciotti winning. He won by 824. If all the CP & IP votes went against him, he still would have won. Another case of the tail wagging the dog.
Registering 100 new Conservatives ( or should i say... Democrats who changed enrollment because Suozzi told them to ?) BRILLIANT!
it was 38 new reg conservatives and he lost bad tonight ... he will again be a loser
