The latest of the mailings has gone out in the partisan war over the state Senate. The election for the post at stake, held by rookie Sen. Craig Johnson (D-Port Washington) isn't until November -- of next year.
Liz B. describes the color piece here and more is expected from the Johnson fans today about the Yom Kippur timing. But you can't beat somebody without somebody else, and we still don't have a clue as to who the Republican candidate will be.
UPDATE: A national organization of Jewish Democrats issued a condemnation of the mailing. Click below for an excerpt of the statement.
"Today, the New York Chapter of the National Jewish
Democratic Council (NJDC) condemned the New York State Republican Committee
for mailing a disingenuous smear piece to Seventh District residents which
offers misleading information about State Senator Craig Johnson.
"The mail piece claims that Senator Johnson has “abandoned our schools” with
no evidence to back up this false claim other than that the Senator did not
sign on to a non-binding letter. The attack on Johnson is so vague, that
the Republican mailer does not even include the text of said letter.
"In truth, Senator Johnson has a strong voting record on education. And, he
was involved in direct negotiations with the Governor’s budget teams that
produced a record 19.27% increase in aid for Seventh district schools: $25
million.
“The Republican efforts to smear Senator Johnson are pathetic,” said Marcia
Dickstein Sudolsky, Chair of NJDC New York. “He has an impeccable record on
education and the Republicans know it. That’s why they are trying to
cynically confuse voters rather than campaign on the facts.”
"The Republican attack ad was delivered to the homes of several district
residents on Yom Kippur, which Jews observed on Saturday, September 22.

"Pathetic" is absolutely the right word to use when, as always, the last of the dying Republicans try such a shameless smear campaign. Where is their evidence? Their new ideas? More importantly, where is their respect for one of the most important Jewish holidays of the year?
Good on the NJDC. Watching the Senate GOP flail about while their majority drowns is kind of amusing, until my friend is getting what roughly amounts to hate mail on the day of atonement.
Nice job, Grandpa Joe!
