Ellis re-elected Smithtown GOP boss; dumps vice chair

Smithtown Republican chairman Bill Ellis, who lost a primary against Legis. John M.Kennedy Jr. last week, won re-election Wednesday night as town leader, but dumped his party vice chairman, Richard Glasheen.

An unhappy Glasheen said in a letter that Ellis replaced him because the town leader ultimately has designs on becoming Suffolk Elections commissioner and wanted a "personal friend" as second in charge so he could maintain control of the town party -- or, "perpetuate his dynasty." Ellis already works at the elections board but under county law, would have to step down ...

as party leader were he to become commissioner.

"He said I was getting too old and incapacitated and wouldn't be able to last a full two year term," said Glasheen -- a disabled veteran who injured his leg at Okinawa and walks with a cane."He told me it was his intention to close up the office and resign shortly after he is elected."

Ellis denied Glasheen's claims, noting the current GOP elections commissioner Cahty Richter Geier has three years left on her four-year term. The current coimmissioner says she plans to fulfill her full term. "I think he just sat down at his typewriter and started to make things up," said Ellis.

Ellis also installed a new party secretary, Jane Smith, to replace Fran Ferraro, who resigned the post "for family reasons."

Meanwhile the Islip GOP re-elected State Sen. Caesar Trunzo to a new two-year term without opposition at party headquarters Wednesday night.
